This game burns my eye's for some reason.
Like the title states, this game for what ever reason makes my eyes hurt after long play sessions.. No idea why but I have played all manner of games on many different platforms since the mid 80's. I still have long gaming sessions on many popular title that some of you are sure to own. This is the only game that does this to me. Anyone else experience the same? I don't have any issues with eye sight and I don't wear glasses. I don't need to, I have fantastic eye sight.

I think the dark areas are too dark and the overall brightness is too bright. Staying indoors (in-game I mean) also hurts my eyes for some reason. I'll try the nvdia tweaking.
Yea it's the base interior that has lighting issues. It doesn't matter what brightness or gamma I use the interior is too bright. Also the lights they use for heaters and reactors are too bright. Same for materials such as uranium.. After adjusting the brightness and gamma, when I exit the base the world is dark during the day.. But as soon as I enter my base it's too bright again. There is nothing I can do and my end to fix it. And the eye strain is so bad it's just not worth it. I will play anything else.. Nothing else bothers my eyes..

If brightness is the issue, then you can do a handful of things. If you're on a windows engine, you could simply turn on "night light" when playing, which just takes some of the blue light and brightness. That way you don't have to touch your monitor settings and recalibrate every time. You can also invest in blue light glasses that you can wear when playing Planet Crafter, as it's the blue light that causes the brightness to be "too strong", so making it more yellow softens the blow to your eyes. You could also relocate your base to inside the iridium cave lol. It darkens everything, so you don't have to deal with a bright white base 24/7.

Lastly I want to say don't be so quick to dismiss possible eye problems, or hacks that ""only"" cater to eyesight.. Make a few tests. Next time you play, maybe have an alarm for every 20 minutes where you take 20 seconds to look away from the screen and see if it helps. Maybe get some more light into your room when playing to help combat the brightness contrast. If you get the same result, then you at least eliminated potential causes of your problems, which will help you find your way to a true solution.
I used to think I was immune too, however looking at a bright screen and ignoring my eyestrain and headaches (from being a graphic designer) ended up actually causing some damage. So please don't ever fully dismiss it !!

It could just be the way this games graphics affects your brain, or too much blue light, but if you ever continue to get eye strain, headaches, trouble focusing, or ocassionally blurry vision, do please see an eye doctor for a test just in case !! Oh and remember to stay hydrated my mans.

Just uninstalled and went to play Deep Rock Galactic for 4 hours straight and my eyes feel great.. I know it's the game. NO OTHER GAME AFFECTS ME THIS WAY!!!! NO. OTHER. GAME. I can play anything else just fine for hours on end.. That means it's not my eyes.. I can read the bottom line on the eye chart at the doctor with both eyes while covering one. I don't wear glasses. I do not need glasses. I'm not far sighted or near sighted. I'm not color blind. There is no problem with my eyes. I have never had problems with my eyes.. Never. Do you people not read before you post? Obviously not.

Hi Devil,

You are not alone. It recently started getting head spins and weird feeling eyes too. If I play it too long it starts happening. No other game does it to me either. I recently came straight out and jumped into another Unity title, Empyrion 1.9.10 and it was so good to my eyes. 4k, 120 fps, all graphics options on.

I have suffered from problems with refresh rates and flicker in the past. I noticed that this game doesn't have much in the way of graphic settings, just simple settings. My guess is that it may have something to do with frame buffering, vsync and/or field of view tricking the brain. It could be a combination of factors.

As an experiment I dropped the frame rate from 120 to 60 and that help a bit. I also slowed the mouse sensitivity to 30 so I don't turn so quickly. It took much longer to manifest. I get about 1 to 2 hours into the game and I have shut it down.

Hopefully the devs are reading and check their settings, or add more capability in future releases. For the majority of very young people I would say it's not a problem, but I'm an IT worker and in front of screens all the time.

Yea I haven't had the problem since I quit playing it..

My problem isn't eye strain, but I do feel a little sick after playing for awhile. Maybe whatever weird graphic thing this game is doing causes both. It's a shame too. I got as far as moss and really enjoyed it, but it's not worth playing if I feel worse after I'm done instead of better. You're not the first person to talk about eyestrain with this game either.

I'm sure the devs would be interested in fixing it if they knew exactly what the problem was. It's hard to narrow down vague things like this. Maybe the odd changes in brightness are part of it.

I've played with the FOV, screen shake and mouse sensitivity settings which are the usual culprits. I even started modding so I wouldn't feel the need to run everywhere I go. I suspect it's some kind of weird subtle thing the graphics are doing that my brain doesn't like though.

Just tried that latest patch today. Within minutes the headache was back. This game is the only title that does this. Shame because I really like the game. I hope not too many people are affected.

Yea, I'm still gaming everyday. No issues with my eyes what so ever except when I play this game. I stopped playing this long ago. Waiting on Dragons Dogma 2 to come out in little than over a week from now. Been playing Darktide, Snowrunner, Enshrouded, and Dwarf Fortress lately. I don't care what these devs do for this game. I'm over it.

Lowering the resolution to the next similar ratio seemed to help with the vague motion sickness. Not sure if it would help you or not. Just adding in case it helps someone else.

I have to say that the game is unplayable for me until I can adjust the saturation and contrast. Unlike the author of this thread, I know that I suffer from a hypersensitivity to blue light. When I'm forced to look at blue light, it only takes a few seconds before I feel dizzy and my brain pulls the plug. Yes, I have passed out several times because of it.

I suspect that the fundamental problem for anyone who experiences eye/headaches from the game graphics is quite similar. It's not related to age or the length of time spent playing, but can be explained physiologically.

In fact, many games already offer options to enable people with this limitation to play by providing color filters and desaturation.

Others that don't offer this option unfortunately fail the "health check" for me because even if your eyes don't sensitively react to it, it stresses the brain and provokes reactions that are more insidious.

I've searched all discussions for "saturation" and found surprisingly many threads about it, but unfortunately, there are few solutions that are worth considering.

reshade.me would be an option, but it requires technical know-how, and adjusting through the graphics card software is cumbersome and not an option for relaxed gaming.

One can only hope that the developers take the numerous complaints seriously and integrate a solution into the game options.

I'm finding that this happens to me with a lot of games on the Unity engine. No Rest for the wicked is another game I found that causes me eye strain after playing it for about an hour. Another Unity title. It's a great game too. On other games I can play for hours and hours and my eyes are just fine. I'm playing a few different titles right now and no eye issues what so ever.. For hours and hours..

Reshade works wonders for this game.
As much as I like the graphics style, overall saturation was killing me as well.
Only issue I had was the 2D icons for items can end up rather dull when turning down sat.

prod80 shaders, saturation limiter to 50%
