edit, a tip: build a Shredder next to your T2's.
T3 have the same storage capacity as T1, but they allow to target a single ore.
I pretty much agree with you. From my perspective, the extra ores that are dug up along with the target ore have greatly reduced my running around picking up stuff on the ground. Except for silicon. That one seems to always be in short supply, but very easy to find running around.
I will probably build a T3 extractor once it unlocks (that's the last one still to go for me) just to check it out and see how it's selectiveness (steam spell checker didn't like that word, but wiktionary does) affects the rest of my ore accumulation.
Besides, for me anyway, rebuilding in order to expand my storage capacity is part of the fun. :)
However, after T3... You can dedicate one or multiples of those to each base ore, which make for small (15 each) perfectly renewable storage. No more need for Shredder except possibly at your main base to get rid of excess unused mats from upgrading your generators.
With the use of a network of teleporter, there is not much moving around :

Otherwise, I stand by my point that T2 offer a bigger inventory, at a lower cost, but it does require a Shredder.
To shred what? I take all the crap and turn them into Super Alloy.
Edit : Even T2's which are about a bit less then twice capacity, with a shredder, at Super Alloy is more efficient. Moving 6 units around, even with T5 Backpack has a max yield of 5 super alloy... with some effort. T2's can generate and hold something like up to 25 (with some clean-up with shredder). T3's can generate a guaranteed 15. Even a pair of T2's or T3's will give you more bang for you bucks.
Currently I haven't even built one T2 to collect SA, I have T2s for other ores. When I do need more SA I will build a T2.
I've yet to need more than one T2 for each resource.
Wow! Now that's automation! But I'm curious: What's the motivation for mining and making all that stuff? I have reached the waiting-on-fish update stage, have rebuilt my base to my liking, have launched more rockets, added more drills, etc. There's not much else to do except watch the Terraforming index tick up. Maybe you're anticipating a great need for materials after the next update?
