If you do like it and decide to buy, your demo save game can carry over to the retail and you can continue from there.
Satisfactory (just like this game) is in early access. The devs fully intend to provide a story line upon full release, so it's too early to state that it has no goal. Also the point is to play it as you wish. Exploration, resource finding/collecting and of course, factory building.
You just have to look on Youtube or Twitch at some of the extraordinary concepts and creativity amongst Satisfactorians, to appreciate what the game is capable of. It's a masterpiece of games-making (in my humble opinion). Not that everyone would agree, as it's all down to what kind of games people prefer, but I think many Planet Crafter players, who may be unaware of Satisfactory, would be very impressed.
To the original post, "Any point playing this after Satisfactory?" I have approx 1600 hours in Satisfactory, and it still has me completely hooked. I also have over 400 hours in this game and I really enjoy it too. There are occasions after updates, where the activity in Planet Crafter drops off a bit, until the next update. So, these are times when I leave it for a while and return to Satisfactory or other games in my list.
However, it's always a tough ask to directly compare the merits of two very different games. The similarities in resource collection and exploration are not enough to consider them the same. If pushed, I would award Satisfactory a 10/10, even before full release. Planet Crafter deserves at least an 8/10, but is being developed by a tiny 2 person team, (doing a superb job) whereas Satisfactory has Coffee Stain Studios, with a large number of staff behind it.
They are both very worthy of gracing your games titles list!
I'm a hardcore Satisfactory player btw.
It's more like mostly original with a hint of Satisfactory meets Subnautica meets Surviving Mars: Green Planet DLC (or Terraforming Mars, idk, I got that game for free but haven't touched it). In fact, I'd say it has more in common with the Surviving Mars: Green Planet DLC than with Satisfactory. While you do have mining and crafting in this game, the target goal is to terraform the planet into a habitable one. You start out on a desolate planet with a hostile environment and gradually craft it into a habitable planet with native life on it using the items you mined or find along the way. And along the way a bit of lore starts popping up here and there about the planet's backstory.
However, I should note that the game is mostly peaceful. You have no hostiles in your way compared to Satisfactory and Subnautica. Your main enemies are the hostile weather and a very limited supply of oxygen, and they stop being a problem once you progressed far enough in-game.
