There's 100+ blue chests and what, 18 gold ones now? There's no 'punishment' for opening chests. Open as you go. I did a play through where I tried to hold of and by end game, when I opened them, I wasn't getting anything I couldn't already craft easily. Open as you go, you'll be fine.
I had the same experience. Yes I was finding better stuff but it doesn't really matter after a certain point when you're getting full lockers of pulsar quartz falling from the sky.
I'll keep going, but I have noticed that my storage is full of mostly crap seeds etc. I wonder what the inventory would look like if i'd waited until I reached a higher level before exploring.
I still think the idea is questionable. "Magical lootboxes" that change contents in reaction to the player actions seem like an odd fit for a sci-fi game. Just my 2 cents.
I played that game briefly, and didn't know that was a thing there either. Maybe my second suggestion is better, simply communicate this better so players don't find out after they do most of the exploring and looting.
Here's what one of the devs had to say about chests. As far as the impact short of Lirma /Seeds being generated at later stages I don't really think it matters. Although you do need microchips but if you go to one of the southern corners there is the dev chest full of them so you could technically wait on the chests and hope for more of the limited items vs the beginning just being junk.
