Is there a way to automate (breathing) O2 at lower levels?
Collecting cobalt to make refills is getting old and using up my cobalt.

Water - you can make the collector to automate it.

Food - A couple of food growers and good to go

Oxygen - ???

Build one room buildings everywhere you go, once you have 10 or so around the world you'll be fine.

I set up little 'oxygen outposts' scattered around. Just a room with a door. Jump in when your tank is getting low.

You can always disassemble them later.

/facepalm

Certainly early access...

So at some point you get a gas collector, it collects methane, but occasionally gives oxygen, maybe if you had 3-4 of those, you could get free auto oxygen that way. But in general, I also use a box room in my travels ahaha, 2 iron 1 titanium+ 1 iron 1 silicon one titanium for door? thats like 10 seconds worth of looking around on the ground.

As far as cobalt, and other basic minerals, just place a minining collector or two next to base, they will randomly get every common mineral, so you can have unlimited cobalt for oxygen

Take the materials for a single living compartment and a single door with you wherever you go. When you short of oxygen, build the compartment and door and get into it. Takes around 8 seconds if you've practised, so you need to think a little ahead.

Ah, I see Imperium posted the same advice in different words.

Also Oxygen becomes irrelevant once you get to breathable atmosphere.
maestro Oct 20, 2022 @ 6:23pm
I like to use single rooms, I don't carry the materials around on me (unless I'm venturing to a specific location with the intent of setting up such a room), though: nothing is more annoying than running out of inventory room when you're trying to loot a wreck/empty your ore extractors/etc.

Instead of using up 6 slots on 2 Titanium, 1 Silicon and 3 iron, I like to build little "rest stops" in strategic locations on the map, and I'll usually put them in places that make it easier to find my way around (like, putting one in front of a cave to make it easier to find the entrance from a distance). I also like to put these outside of wrecks with lockers inside of them so I can "pool" all of the loot and put it in the lockers which makes carrying all that stuff back to my base much easier.

I also like to place windmills as path markers, they only cost 1 iron and it even generates a tiny speck of electricity too, but the thing is... they are tall and visible from a distance which is the main reason why I use them.

As slow as my OT is increasing that will be in about a hundred years...this is my first play through.

You will unlock things that make it faster.

Sure, that Vegetube t1 is going at a snail's pace, but a t2 will go faster.

And then, you'll eventually get a flower spreader, put your best seed in that. then the T2 flower spreader.

Oh, and the Biodome T2.

And then the algae spreaders (you will want these for the algae they produce, too!)

And so on and so forth.

But don't focus solely on o2; you need Pressure and Heat, too! You need to just aim for the next goals and keep increasing all of those at a steady pace and you will unlock things.

But don't forget about exploring! There are very "powerful" seeds hidden away in the world, you will know one when you see it, as it is ridiculously good compared to everything else for awhile (you eventually find ones almost as good), so it's good to look around.

Hint: There's a cave near the starting area if you chose the standard start. In the back of this cave, you might find a special container with one in it.

I have a few of those seeds 600%

I've been exploring, in fact just used the mobile home method and visited what I see is called the Stargate™

Early game my rule is at a minimum 3 iron, 2 titanium, 1 silicon for a survival shelter... *always* and no excuses when exploring a new area or gathering resources in a untouched area until there's a breathable atmosphere. Optional 1 additional iron for storage chest, or later 3 additional for locker, for those times you run across good loot and want to store it in a shelter until you can haul it back to base. Also, *never* go anywhere early game without at least 1 oxygen, 1 water and 1 food item because sometimes you forget just how far you've wandered from your nearest shelter or foodstuff. Personally, I didn't enjoy suffocating on the stairs of my base just feet from fresh air. That was my stupid fault.

With the state of the game balance right now, you have to be just flat out not paying attention in order to actually suffocate or dehydrate. Starving is the real danger early on until you unlock a means of food production. If you're diligent about setting up survival shelters and progressing a bit through the tech tree you shouldn't often need to use oxygen tanks, and thus not use up cobalt, except very early game before you've unlocked the room and door techs, or when exploring too far away from the nearest shelter. There are later techs that mine unlimited amounts of given resources, but you can make the finite supplies of common resources on the surface last a very long time and it's a big map so there's plenty too... readily accessible if again you've been diligent about building survival shelters. Later game pre-breathable atmo I've got full upgrades on my oxygen tank and backpack, so I'll still carry resources for at least 1 shelter, maybe 2 if I'm trailblazing, plus 3 each of the basic survival supplies because I can and at that point I'm sightseeing between tech unlocks.

hehe...I just played through Subnautica again and played Subnautica Bel;ow Zero...I'm well aware of packing for a trip ;-)

Playing those is why I bought this game...more of the same...well EXTREMELY similar.

Indeed. Honestly I wish the map was much, much larger than its current roughly 15 sq km. It's a handcrafted map, so that is a major investment of development time. As it's in early access they could still very well expand the current map, and they've stated they'd like to do that and add additional alternative pre-made maps to play on, but right now you can easily cover the whole map very early on spamming survival shelters. We're not likely to see it with this game, but procedurally generated maps (a la NMS) to terraform would be incredible. As it is, one run and you know the map and where to go and where not to build your base... unless you're going for that Sealab 2021 vibe. That was a good trick with the Subnauticas, the dark water gave the feeling the maps were much more vast.

Setting up a quick quarters, is the best thing early game as stated, I usually also put a few storages in there and stock it with food, water, and O2, and usually just stash whatever goodies I find in the area till I'm ready to head back to my base. I will also set them up near crashes, caves, ect as I explore them. Then while I'm just twiddling my thumbs waiting for my numbers to rise, I will sometimes go to the different ones, and just clean up all the resources on the ground, and store them in the shelters till I need them later.

100% the map is this game biggest weakness right now, its full of clipable terrain, ugly cliffs and overall... just feels like a placeholder map. The jetpack is also very bugged, it can get you anywhere on the map right now, including sections closed off by Ice meant for late game, doesnt matter if you just fly right over the cliffs.

I love the idea of this game, and it is only version 0.6 something, Potential for Expansions and DLCS are limitless...
