An easy way to build underground
I don't know if people have posted this before, but after trying various ways to build into and under the ground, I found an easy way to get there.
If you go down into the undergrounds complex in the cold area, go to the room next to where the bed is and build a ladder. When you go up there, you'll now be in the underground region. Make sure you take lots of materials to build more rooms, etc. and you'll be able to expand on this area and have breathable rooms.

You know, that idea is just crazy enough to work... 🤣

Please do a You Tube video so we can see it being done, :)

You can also do it by editing the save file.

Out of curiosity, can you eventually build a usable ladder from your own constructions back up to the surface? That would allow you to disconnect the link into the non-breathable area if desired.

Not sure if I know what you are asking, but the mechanics work the same above an below ground. Put one pod above ground with a ladder leading up. Then go into the save file and reduce the y value of position so that only the top of the ladder is visible. After that you can go below and add more rooms (pods). Position is x,y,z

Yes you can. You'll just need to mess around with things to find the right place, but it's cool to play with.

It's as easy as doing what I said. Just go to that room, put a room ladder in and go up it. Then you will be under the ground and you can get back in using that ladder. It also means you'll be able to fly around to other areas so you can build where you want.
Can someone tell me how I can link to my screenshots here? Thanks.

Another place you can do this is the underground area in the crater. Just go down both indoor ladders and the rest of it is all at the same level. What I did was build 4 indoor ladders at different points. Then go up a ladder, build a pod over that compartment so the ladder is inside it. Go back out and build pods over the other ladders. This is so that you can decorate the existing bunker and have safety airpods nearby (you just go up the ladder when your oxygen is low). You could still build an outside area if you want.

On a similar vein... I was in the underground-side-of-the-hill bunker in the Crater...
and I was a bit lost, unsure of where I had explored,
so I built a ladder thingy and popped up on top of the pod.
Then I could walk around, on top of the pods,
studying the layout and looking for any hidden areas that I may have missed.
Cheating, yes.

But if you stepped off a pod, you fall through the world because its not really part of the map.

Why you would want to build a base in an unmapped/unworking game area, is beyond me.

For the view, of course.
To see if I can! FYI: the area is working! I built: Iron Mines. Farms, Bee Hives, Butterfly Feeders, Water collectors, Methane Collector, tree spreaders, Flower spreaders,Fusion Power, Heaters, Drillers,Bio-Domes,bio-lab,Living compartments, etc... All are working!!!!!!!!!!
So my base has Air, Water, Food, Power, resources, and the mean to teleport to any resource needed. Also found an easy access to a space where I can walk both in/out if need, I call it Nulspace. I first built in the shallow area but after seeing every thing work, I moved to the deep area to build bigger!
FYI: All Cave not under water and large enough I have a base in. For rock floor cave you can place thing like water collector, fusion power farms on top of the living compartment
All cave bases have 4x4 Living compartment, Bio-labs, and teleport

Many people have wanted to see if they can get underground to build there so I gave a way you can do it. When you actually build things there, you won't necessarily fall off. If you don't want to then fine. But not everyone is like you.
