Not really that big. You can cross the map with one oxygen bottle and a jetpack. But the game is not finished yet and more is to be added.

thxs for the map. But it doesn't show where the standard landing is, so not easy to orient ourselve...

The standard landing area is right about dead center of that map.

On the right hand side of the map is a vertical list of icons. When you hover your mouse over that list (anywhere over it), the list will change from icons to a text list. The third one up from the bottom, labeled 'General', is the one you want to click on. Doing so will display a bunch of icons all over the map.
As stated above by storm.hound, almost dead center of the map is an icon that looks like a little house. If you hover your mouse over it, a message will show up in the top, right corner that says 'Spawn: Random'. There's another similar icon just to the right of that one that will display a message that says 'Spawn: Standard'.

That should show you what you're asking about.

If you scroll your mouse wheel over the map, you can zoom in and out.
If you left click+hold and scroll your mouse wheel, you can move around the map.
At the bottom/center is an icon that looks like a double arrow in a circle. Clicking on the will rotate the map.
Currently, by default, that map opens with East at the top of the map.
At the bottom left you can see the lat and long numbers of the spot your mouse is on the map.
The slider at the top will change the map from the start terrain to the terrain after the water develops.

Edit 1: I just fired the game up for the first time in quite a while and it seems that the 'Spawn: Random' and 'Spawn: Standard' icons on the map are reversed.
