Crysis® 3

Poor Performance on AMD GPU and Windows 10
I recently decided to play through the entire Crysis series. I have the entire series over on Origin.

I have AMD Ryxen 7 3700x, a 5700XT, 16GB RAM and the games installed on Nvme drive.
Had a few issues getting Crysis to work work but found a fix over on the PC gaming wiki.

Both Crysis and Crysis Warhead ran as about expected at 1440p and 8xMSAA, generally high FPS in the 80fps range with some significant FPS drops in demanding locations and missions, Crysis was quite stable with 1 crash up till you gets to the carrier missions when a known memory leak causes crashes about 4-5 before I beat the game. Warhead had less FPS dips and better overall fpd but was generally less stable with about 6 crashes through my playthrough.

Crysis 2 ran exceptional well with very high frame rates at 1440p, so much so that I had put V-Sync on to prevent screen tearing even though I have a Freesync 2 monitor as I was exceeding the 165hz refresh rate of my monitor. Not a single crash through my playthough.

Crysis 3 on the other hand runs very poorly, max settings at 1440p with 8XMSAA and I'm straight away down in the mid 40fps range with dips down into the 30's. Frame rate depend on what your looking at goes up and down but there is specific areas where the frame rate tanks into the teens. I'd consider the performance unplayable. Lowering AA settings or switching them off entirely didn't help fps in a significant manner. Only turning down LOD improved performance but still the performance is not good enough. No where close to a stable 60FPS

PC gaming wiki lists Crysis 3 as having issues with AMD gpus on Windows 10 and searching around the web and youtube it seems to be the case with other 5700XT, Vega gpu users and RX 480 series GPU's showing the same issues on Windows 10.

I'm going to try installing a Windows 7 build on a spare hard SSD drive I had and try again, but for more be warned, if your running AMD GPU's and Windows 10 you can expect very poor performance. I'll let you know if running the game on Windows 7 is any better.

Not sure if the fault lies with Windows 10, AMD or EA or maybe a combination of them but if they are selling this game it should be investigated and fixed.

so buy Nvdia gpu :D on gtx 1070 work as well :) on gtx 980 too. amd make only good cpu not gpu :p and please delete windows 10(scam/spam unintuitive system) and instal NORMAL windows 7 ^^

I'm not going to buy a different GPU just to play a single 7 year old game.
The RX 5700XT beats its Nvidia competitors (RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070) in performance at the price point I was willing to spend on a GPU.
I've yet to notice any scams or spam with Windows 10 nor do I find it unintuitive so I'll stick with it thank you very much.

Just want to flag an issue with this game for users thinking of buying the game.

Lower some of your settings, you won't notice much difference. ;)
Search for custom config files on the web.

There are 2 config files "autoexec.cfg" and 'system.cfg'

Crysis 3 has lots of settings that can be customized through config files, and doing so would greatly improve your performance without much loss in visual image.

I was thinking of buying ( vega user here ) but I guess I will skip then game is quite old so I dont believe any fixes on drivers or game updates will come for those issues which is 100% normal , those gpu's didnt exist by the time the game came out.

same on RTX 2060 - Ryzen 5 2600. fps drops sometime under 50

Don't use MSAA in this game. The SMAA setings (mainly 2x and 4x) give the best quality.

Why the F is your MSAA at 8x? You literally don't need it and wouldn't be able to perceive a difference between that and 2x.

Think about what the settings you change actually do.

8x MSAA is too demanding for 1440p on 5700 XT hardware. Lower your settings.

I get "mostly" 60 fps with some dips (and in a few areas, severe dips) with very high settings smaa medium (2TX) with Radeon VII.

Turns out it is a Windows 10 issue. I installed Windows 8.1 on a spare SSD and installed Crysis 3 on it. Playing it and I noticed the frame rate was a little better but the main thing was the massive frame rate drops down to the teens where no longer happening. In a location when frame rate was tanking to 18FPS it was now dropping to 50FPS, a much better performance.

You are right about MSAA been two demanding for my hardware. I switched to 4XSMAA and the performance was much better. I should be able to max the game out and for the most part keep above the minimum Free Sync windows of 45FPS and most of the time be well north of 60FPS.

Having looked at the Crysis 3 AA image comparison and performance comparison over at tweak guides, I think I will set it to 2TX as you have done as it does seem to have quite a lower hit to performance than 4XSMAA.

I'm aware that 8XMSAA is very demanding. I got away with in Crysis and Crysis Warhead and considering Crysis 3 is 7 years old and alot better optimized to Crysis or Crysis Warhead are I though I might get away with it again.

However its not the cause of the massive frame rate drops to FPS as I was getting those with no AA enabled at all. Its a known issue as the video below demonstrates, not my video but same specs and I get the issue in the exact same location.

Nice find. I'm on Windows 10 (version 2004) and it's been running decently for me, though I do have some areas that seem to have a rather inexplicable framerate drop. I mean, i'm playing at 4K, but still.

Interesting that you also opted to use 19.8.1, the 2020 edition drivers (20.4.2) for Windows 7 don't install correctly on 8.1?

Well you can't expect frame rate drops in the same location regardless of OS, just no where near as severe as they are on Windows 10.

That's not my video, its just a person with the same specs as me having the same issue, though he's running at 21:9 resolution of 2560x1080 compared to my 16:9 2560x1440.

Windows 7 Adrenalin 2020 drivers do not work on Windows 8.1 so I used the last Adrenalin 2019 drivers I could find 19.11.3

Same issue here. Windows 10 AMD 3700X 32GB ram and 5700 XT. Most of the time it runs perfect but in some areas huge framedrops.
