Clinchfield mainline missions
Can anybody get the train moving on these missions? I've had all 3 locos with sand on and any throttle position and I can't get them moving. Brakes are off, power is to all locos. Should I coast backward to level ground and get a run off? I guess I'm doing something wrong here.

The mainline services really need to be rethought. These are far to hard to get started. I have tried every hill-start method in the book and anything starting uphill with the 3 SD-40 set will just not move. If it moves its a 0.6mph which is ridiculous to expect to spend that time on a scenario.

You will need a lot of patience. The trains are long and it takes several minutes to fully release the brakes.

Aplly a bit of power, notch 2 is enough, then release the train brake. Watch the brake pipe pressure go up, till at least 75 and then your train starts moving, if you did not make other mistakes.

Got the train going at 0.6 mph. Judging from other comments, this is the tops until you reach level grade. Yikes,

Same. This scenario needs more power or less weight for these conditions. Unrealistic to spend 2+ hours on the first 4 miles of 4/6 mainline jobs.

this mission ... xD

This really is a mystery to me.
I actually managed to bring the train up to about 1,5 km/h by quickly increasing and decreasing the throttle. Unfortunately it was not sustainable for long. I either missed the tiny timing window after a while and ran into wheelslip or, when I gave myself a break from hitting A/D like a maniac, the speed decreased back to 1 km/h pretty quickly and stayed there.

Thats the thing.
As far as i know you have 2 possibilities

1. A/D maniac (you can save game after reaching next step/notch)
2. Drive up the hill with 0.6 mph for 80 minutes

Yeah!!!

I finally made it to the end!
I chose the method of letting the train roll back a few hundred meters for a less steep gradient. That extra leverage plus a bit of A/D wiggling got me up to 4-5 km/h pretty easily. From there it was just a matter of patience. Going to the first tunnel 4-5 times faster turned the original chore actually into a quite fascinating experience. I cheered when I got to the tunnel and the pace finally picked up! I got so excited, that I almost fumbled it at one point. :D

Takes a while for the brakes to release then it moves without to much difficulty.

In situations such as this in real operations you have two choices,

1: Double the hill. - split the consist to reasonable weight and take it up the hill to a siding, drop those cars then double back for the rest. Sometimes it might require tripling the hill.

2. If clear behind and having permission from the dispatcher, back down till your locomotives can gain traction where you can gain enough speed to gain momentum to help to crest the grade.

And as the previous poster noted, watch your brakes and make sure they are released... takes about 3 - 5 minutes for the rear brakes to be released. Set the loco brakes, apply power, once the rear brakes are released, release the loco brakes, that way you are not working against yourself.

I dont think this is a bug pulling heavy loads in real life trains crawl thru the breaks park coming from Elkhorn.
