There is no "engine" per se, as it's an electric train that's powered whenever it's picking up from third rail. From completely dead, the basic way to start up the 1972 stock without all the extras is as follows:
1. Insert the control key (to the right of the seat, standing may help you see it better)
2. Turn control key to ON
3. Insert reverser
4. Move reverser to "INTER"
5. Move the Traction Brake Handle to EMERGENCY then to OFF AND RELEASE
6. Press the Audible Warning Valve Reset to stop the hissing
7. Move the Traction Brake handle to RHEO 1 HOLD
8. Set the Reverser to FORWARD

You should be able to move now by moving the Traction brake handle. If you can't, and if you have switched cabs, you may need to make sure you shut down the other cab properly. To shut down a cab, you need to:
1. Move the Traction Brake to SHUTDOWN
2. Remove the reverser
3. Turn Control Key to OFF
4. Remove Control Key.
If you've done this right, the passenger lights should be off and the tail lights on the cab you shut down should be on/headlights off

I can get it set up as above and start moving but there are times when it appears to lose its power source and when I restart the startup procedure and apply power the train does not move as if there is no power available, also there are no alarms.

Losing power is normal, third rails are not continuous at some spots. You should not slow down too much or stop there otherwise you are traped. Pretty cool simulated.

How do you move traction brake to shutdown? There's no option for it for me
