All characters are viable for every mission but some are clearly better. Its just unfortunate that first timers have to start a mission first to see the map. For this map, Cla'lish and Bill are particularly good IMO because of elevation and little cover, especially the final section. Witches are not revanants and are vulnerable to bleeding. They tend to stupidly bleed themselves to death by chain summoning. You should have quite abit of blue dynamite by this time, and revanants are vulnerable to fire.
I also felt that pain :)
Try to implement shotguns, instead of relying on dynamite. The Deer is your best character once he has some speed via cards, give him full house or better+ play him with the TP/kill item (i took the +2 TP /-Luck item).
Go with this squad:
Melee(use stun weapon)+Shotgun
Rifle (the machine gun is nice 2ap/per shot BUT -25% hit chance STILL WORTH IT!)
Shotgun(bleed+Crit chance items/cards)
Handgun(trickshot)
Every level consists minimum 2 "areas" in 1 map. Enemy spawn related to your map position.
So first clear the area without advancing too much. Hide in cover let enemy approach into you till you dealed some damage and your melee can combo// or your shotgun has a good angle and then your melee can combo...
Once you clear an area you can press turn end, and your turn will directly appear.
In this stage just move your cowboys 1 AP forward. Then the team will be together when the new enemy wave spawns, triggered by map position (it is basically obvious where these positions are) - follow this strategy it will help- you will have 5-8 enemy in front of you usually.
Regarding the witches, shotgun dynamite and good positioning does the trick. You can basically clean the minions while shotgunning the witches, too. Bleed is also nice, cause they might bleed 6 dmg per turn (2cast +run).
But usually you can kill them on lower difficulties without problems:
1) Use flynn to swap a witch to your party and kill one
2) shoot a witch and use deer to run to it and kill it
3)explosives, blue dynamite
4)beecher rifle with gin, if you gave him the right cards he should gain 25 luck every kill and +1 gun damage, he can usually snipe one witch
5)assault the objective area with bill and gin, using their abilities should clear everything up
6)witches can be disables with a gunstock melee weapon, usually deer disables or kills one
7)take the high ground, ignore shotguners and kill gunmen, eventually you will use ricochet shots and explosives to kill the enemies down there.
8) Exploit, gin with beecher rifle can crit about 19% so kill 3 enemies and then aim for the witch, the damage should be 10 and the crit is 20 so its 1-shot for sure
But they should just reduce it to 2 witches, they are very broken as it is
I spent 40 minutes in the last 6 rounds trying to find ways to kill them and there is no way to kill even 2 of them, they ruined my game.
So i had to use deer to quickly kill one of them, swap one with flynn and another i dont remember, i think i swaped with flynn again

If nightmare us too hard for some people why won't they just play on lower difficulties?
Yes i have to admit its extremely poorly balanced in some areas.
Blackhearts for example are just unbelievably overpowered.
They can literally remove your chars entire health with one spell. Its absurd.
They cannot do that, that would mean they swap HP while being at 0 HP.
I love that the game let me do that, didn't warn or stop me making a careless, obvious mistake.
