Calamity (Most popular and used, includes 26 new bossees, adds post Moon Lord content and bosses, a new class, five biomes, two new difficulties "Revengeance Mode" and "Death mode" with Death Mode being the more challenging of the two, and tons of new enemies and weapons. Has a more non vanilla feel, recommended with the "Vanilla Calamity mod music" mod, and the "Calamity mod texture pack" to smooth everything out in terms of style, go with the most subscribed ones.)
Thorium ( Adds 11 new bosses including one post Moon Lord boss fight, three new classes including thrower, healer, and bard, a new biome, new enemies, and over 2600 new items, all of which have a vanilla type feel.)
Mod of Redemption (Has 11 new high-quality boss fights, not even kidding or biased here, an Abandoned Lab dungeon, multiple structures, a Wasteland subplot and biome, new weapons and items, brand new game mechanics, debuffs, and much more which is best if you find it on your own.)
Split mod WARNING, 1.3 ONLY FOR NOW! (The split mod goes for quality over quantity if thats your thing, its feel is semi vanilla. The Split mod adds 7 new boss fights, new subclasses, game mechanics such as photography, 2 new biomes. I know it's smaller then some other mods but its still interesting.)
Fargo's Souls ( Fargo's Souls mod adds enchantments, essences, souls, forces, 15 new difficulty-affected bosses, and more. It also adds the well-known "Eternity Mode," which ramps up the difficulty a ton with new boss AI and mechanics. The mod also features unique weapons and items, which are best if you find them yourself or with friends.
Recommended with "Fargo's Music mod" and "Fargos Souls DLC" If played with Calamity which bridges the incompatibility gap most of the way with the difficulties and other things)
Spirit mod ( The Spirit mod adds 8 new bosses, new enemies, new biomes and structures, new weapons, new events, and new music. It has a vanilla plus feel like the Thorium and the Split mod but it's more to add to your playthrough rather than be the spotlight.)
The Stars Above ( Copied from the Wiki because I got lazy after typing all this, The Stars Above is an expansion mod for Terraria that prides itself on standing apart from other mods. Any modded playthrough can be invigorated with the addition of two charismatic deuteroganists, weighted ability systems, modular ultimate abilities, special upgradable Aspected Weapons, and more. Explore pre-made dungeons, face off against 9 powerful Bosses, and unravel the mystery of the cosmos.)
Side mods:
Quality of life compendium ( A large collection of QOL mods in one big mod all of which are configurable)
Vein miner (Mine ores instantly and add and remove ANY block to the instant mining list)
Provedition, a soundtrack mod (Adds new and great sounding songs that replace the original Terraria soundtrack in case you got bored of the old soundtrack)
Magic storage (Adds a more compact and easy to use and search storage system)
Boss checklist ( Adds a boss checklist so you can see what bosses you've encountered and defeated in the current world, also includes Minibosses and events. Use "Progressive checklist" to avoid spoilers for first-time playthroughs)
Mod compatibility checker (Self-explanatory, checks if mods will interfere with each other)
Calamity Infernum (Adds a new difficulty over Death Mode for Calamity)
Teleport all NPC'S home (Self-explanatory, teleports all town NPC's to their homes with a key bind)
