How do I get my vanilla terraria characters in this?

I think you need to go into the game files of vanilla terraria and move your character like that. Be sure to copy the file of your character before you do it though, just in case. This video may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3DugKPVRlw

i was able to transfer my characters but i can't play as them. is there any way i can actually play as them after i transfer them

You won't be able to import a 1.4 character into Tmodloader, if that's what you are trying to do. Tmodloader is still on an older version of Terraria. You'de need your saves untouched by 1.4 to play modded.

You can use an Inventory editor that has the capability to roll back versions of the character. It worked for my 1.4.x character
