Calamity mod why is range so miserable
Barely any range accessories post moon lord and dies in 1-3 hits and you can't see ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because of the visual clutter especially when you have a friend playing Summoner. Visually boring af weapons and hits like a wet noodle.

What's the appropriate build for this? Just beat providence and I'm so tempted to switch to any other class than this garbage.

Ranger used to be the best class in the game just like in vanilla (great damage, consistent dps, no visual clutter), but now its the opposite in every sense of the word, every good weapon got nerfed, every good accessory got nerfed, it only continues to get worse every update, take the photovicerator for example, no visual clutter + aimbot and great dps paired with the elemental quiver made it the meta choice, now it puts a huge laser over the enemy so you cant see what they are shooting and it lost its aimbot along with the dps being nerfed into the ground

Well that's a shame. The progression for range is so awful post moon lord it's not even funny.
I just made a Galaxia sword and it just tore bosses to shred in half a minute without any armor set or accessory dedicated to melee that took my full build range blood, sweat and tears just to finish.

Ranger has literally 1 good weapon in the entire game and thats the phangasm, considering that it has plain visuals its probably next on the "rework" chopping block

melee 10x better
as always, like most mods and the terraria devs themselves, melee gets 85% of their focus and attention while mage and ranger classes battle it out for content, and summoner is left in the dust its always been like this, although summoner has been getting a bit more attention as of late.
summoner is kinda ok its cracked for like late game
yeah, all classes are still good but mage summoner and ranger def are not given as much love as melee
Just played a game with mates (last time played about 2 years ago) and let me tell you, I'd rather castrate myself then EVER play ranger again. They made it immensly trash in lategame going towards calamitas and Exo MEchs. We are talking about a 10-30k DPS difference to my mates (except one) and I already did all I could to get it higher.
Never. EVER. Again!

And they continue to nerf ranger to the ground to this day. In the recent update 2.0.4.001, they reworked the modded ammo in ways that are cool but their damage numbers tend to be average or often full-blown pitiful (some like Dryad Tears are actually above average but not too above average), and when you think they are done, they nerfed all of the ammo, even though most were already not particularly powerful at all and definitely not overpowered in the slightest (and as for above average ones like Dryad Tears, they were nerfed to the ground and are now essentially useless). They nerfed a ton of Vanilla ammo, often for no good reason (they have been doing this since the beginning though). Calamity's old nerfs to crystal and holy arrows were somewhat justified, but since Relogic already nerfed holy arrows, ichor bullets, ichor arrows, and crystal bullets since 1.4.0.1 and/or 1.4.1 or some later updates, Calamity's nerfs to them are now redundant if not completely overkill but nooooo the nerfs persist to this day and in fact are exacerbated (Calamity revoked their nerf to crystal bullets for a short period of time but then imposed an even worse nerf on them, and they nerfed ichor even further). At this point I detected a pattern, if any ammo causes any extra projectiles to spawn for potential bonus damage, the extra projectiles must deal under 30% damage, ideally 20% or 10% damage, which is completely reduced to 1 damage on bosses and a ton of high defense enemies, because Calamity bosses have high defenses to this day, or else the devs will have a mental breakdown, whine about them being too unbalanced, gamebreaking, and overpowered, even if they aren't in the slightest, and nerf them to the ground. At this point the Calamity devs are either full-blown rangerphobic, or drunk. The Calamity devs tend to develop extremely irrational and overblown phobias to certain mechanics in Terraria (most notably, debuffs against enemies, armor penetration, and ranger ammos that spawn extra projectile) which results in them nerfing items that trigger these mechanics to the ground making them borderline useless or underpowered beyond belief. Even if they have good reasons for these phobias (usually stemming from these mechanics being notably difficult to balance), they have 0 reason to nerf these mechanics and items to the extent they do right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were drunk when making these specific decisions. The oppressive and unjustified nerfs to ranger to keep it in a tier of insane mediocrity or even below-averageness because of some stupid reason like "ranger too ez to use, it has to be below average cause it requires no skill" offends me and other ranger lovers to this day.

they also nerfed the minishark which was perfectly balanced and didnt need nerfing for the sake of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on ranger mains

Not to mention the push towards slower firing, "heavy hitting" options which... yeah would be a cool playstyle if I could see the weakpoints or even hit them half the time with how fast some bosses are(granted I don't play below RV mode)
Ranger before 1.5 Draedon update was weird, it had some really above average and busted loadouts but since the other classes were more busted, ranger is overall an average but very solid class. Every class had busted combos but Draedon update nerfed ranger especially post moonlord and early hardmode, but did the same to all of the other classes. Ranger was probably actually buffed in Draedon update (despite the nerf to armor penetration such as reaper shark tooth necklace), it seemed to be performing as good as it was if not better than pre-Draedon update though maybe not. Then update 2.0 1.4-tmodloader-port came and calamity nerfed a ton of things (most notably rogue and summoner) but ranger's power was also further dented, with even more nerfs to armor penetration such as nerfing the ichor debuff along from many of ranger's weapons getting nerfed. Then ranger was mostly left alone in 2.0.1, 2.02, and 2.03 series of updates, as the class didn't have any particularly outstanding weapons and features. The update and its following series smaller updates that truly slammed the nail in the coffin for ranger that I will furiously call "the great raping of ranger" is 2.0.4 Bountiful Harvest update. It reworked all of ranger's ammos in cool but extremely underpowered ways. Ranger was fine before this update, it was overall average in damage but still serviceable if not actually solid and good.
TLDR how good ranger is with every update:
1.4: Average but solid
1.5: Average but solid
2.0: Meh
2.0.1: Meh
2.0.2: Meh
2.0.3: Meh
2.0.4: BAD
Anyways I see what the devs are going to turn ranger into: a weak, boring, but consistent damage class. Ranger has the best range and easiness to hit enemies, especially bosses with, which along with it having some of the best single target DPS (very good in every mod outside of calamity, and even in calamity it was pretty solid until 2.0.4), makes it one of the most popular choices for bossing. In these understandable but still objectively drunk dev's opinions and their twisted sense of balance (obsession with hating the above average), ranger simply can't be made to have even average let alone solid or above average levels of damage or else it will be a "go to class" for all of the players, especially for bossing and bossing is the biggest part of calamity no questions asked. Do I agree that ranger would be a go to class for bossing? Yes. But the way calamity absolutely neutered ranger to degrees that people cannot even comprehend is just full-blown Jim Crow level bigotry against ranger at this point. Let's take a deeper dive. Each class is supposed its pros and cons: melee is good at crowd control, survivability, and close ranged high dps at the cost of range. Summoner has immense DPS and automatic damage through minions at the cost of low survivability and possibly not having long range. Mage is pure dps at the cost of mana management and survivability. Rogue amazing at the cost of mediocre range and requiring aimed and well timed uses of stealth strikes. Ranger I think was designed to have to have long range, consistent and easy to deal damage, and amazing single target DPS. This by itself might be too strong, especially cause this would make ranger one of the top if not the best boss killers, and calamity is all about killing bosses. So a mod like calamity is somewhat justified at making ranger less powerful, and that worked fairly fine in older version of calamity before the 2.0.4 raping ranger update; ranger had either average but still solid dps or at least serviceable dps and has some combos like spicy ammo that can significantly boost your DPS. It was decent at bossing especially if you had bullets that spawned extra low damage projectiles and used methods to reduce enemy defense. Obviously armor penetration methods were nerfed, and ranger's weapons were nerfed, and the bullets were nerfed but it still remained alright with average but consistent and easy to deal long range damage until 2.0.4. where it received a trillion unjustified and extremely crippling nerfs, and now its DPS is clearly below average. Read the changelogs, they nerfed even VANILLA RANGER AMMO AND WEAPONS that weren't even above average in anyway let alone above average compared to other classes. All bonus projectiles from bullets now deal 1 damage to bosses cause they deal like 10% of the damage of the original projectile. Arrows were also oofed though they remains serviceable, but guns are now essentially worthless. This cannot be justified in any way. Ranger literally no longer exists in calamity. Now the devs are mad at ranger is too easy to use so they had to make it a crutch noob trap for those who can't aim. Aside from being easy to aim and use long, it's bad at everything. Single target, multi target, bossing, events, even long range combat, ranger is the worst class because of its nonexistent DPS, especially with guns. if you are playing ranger, don't use guns, I see no point in using guns, though bows may have redeeming qualities. Or just don't play ranger, save yourself the trouble. Summoner is better honestly, it has less survivability and range but is better in every way with amazing DPS if you want easy consistent DPS, just get somewhat closer and learn how to dodge or get tankier. Ranger is now obsolete. It's now is incapable of serving its original traits, roles, and purpose of a simple and probably boring but long range consistent great single DPS class. Calamity turned it into a boring but consistent long damage class that is incredibly weak and outclassed in every way by damage, and is now hopelessly overshadowed by the other 4 classes. Even if you land all your hits your DPS would be abysmal so what's the damn point of using this class. This is what calamity devs wanted probably, ranger too easy to use especially against bosses so it must be weak and outclassed hopelessly in every other way. I don't think this is the answer. I'd rather ranger be slightly above average and a meta pick than hopelessly below average. Justice for rangers, ranger lives matter!
