Out of Workshop Mods

Is there a way to install mods that don't have to go through the steam workshop? Every article I could find was written with the assumption that the mod browser would only go through steam.

If the file is a .tmod, you can put it in documents>my games>terraria>tModloader>mods and it'll work like a workshop mod but without autodownloads

If the mod is an uncompiled mod folder (e.g downloading from github) you can follow the same path but use tModloader>modSources instead of mods folder, and compile it from the in-game develop mods tab.
