tModLoader

tModLoader

Unexpected May 25, 2022 @ 2:48pm
"Please ensure Steam is logged in and running." error on startup.
When I try to start tModLoader i get an error popup that says:

"Please ensure Steam is logged in and running."

Also the game doesn't start since the startup stops with the error popup. Anyone know how to fix this? After searching for tips on the internet I have already tried:

1. Logging out from and restarting the steam client both normally and as administrator. Also tried restarting the computer to make sure everything really gets restarted.

2. Both disabling and shutting down my Antivirus and Firewall.

3. Verifying the integrity of the game files on steam and uninstalling and reinstalling tModloader to make sure none of the game files are damaged. I have done this for both tmod and Terraria.

4. Updated the graphics driver.

5. Removed all files and folders in the steam folder except for the steamapps and userdata folders and restarted steam to get steam to refresh the files in case they where damaged. I have also tried using the Steam beta version since I have read that could work.

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that Terraria is both purchased on steam and started with the steam client so there is no issue with strange versions on Terraria and there is no reason that Steam should think it is not running since the game is started from the actual client it complains about is not running. Normal Terraria is running without a problem so I doubt there is any problems with that installation either.

Any new ideas or tips would be welcome since I'm really looking forward to playing Terraria with mods but have given up for now until the problem gets fixed or someone comes up with a working solution.

look into the alpha/stable versions of tmod, maybe you actually have to pick one now

I have tried both 1.4 alpha stable and alpha preview tmod and it is on stable I get this message. On the preview version I get another strange error message instead that says:

"Steam API hash mismatch, assumed pirated. tModloader requires a legitimate Terraria install to work."

But as I wrote in my first post my Terraria is bought on steam and tmodloader installed on steam and absolutely not pirated.

Thanks for the tips anyway.

Perhaps I should mention that the error messages says I will need a log file from "tModLoader-Logs" in the tModLoader folder if asking for help that it says have been generated but I have no such log file or folder in that location. Is this something that indicates that there is a problem for steam or tmod to access the game folders somehow and that this might be the source of the problem for steam to realize it is running in the stable version and it assuming that my Terraria is pirated if running the preview version?

I don't understand what you mean.

Should I change the IP for terraria somewhere and if so where and how?

I found out how to solve this issue on my own but I'm posting the solution that worked for me here for others that might encounter the same problem.

It was as simple as running the "start-tModLoader.bat" file as an administrator once. After that tModLoader seems to run fine even when running as a normal user. I guess this indicates that during the startup process the game didn't have permission to access something that was necessary for the game to check if steam was running or if the game was legitimate as a normal user which it had as administrator.

In normal cases where the game has an ".exe" start file I usually try running as an administrator as one of the first solutions but in this case I couldn't since tModLoader doesn't have one but now I learned that ".bat" files can work in the same way. Before I didn't even know you could use ".bat" files directly at all but have seen them more like files that games and programs use when running like most file types in a programs folder.
