Friend can't install tmodloader
He was gifted the game, but steam won't let him install it because he doesn't own it? Anyone able to provide help with this?

im pretty sure it works like this, tmodloader can only be owned by people who own terraria because if you get it and don't own terraria then they basically don't have to buy terraria at all to play terraria, you may think this "then why dont they make tmodloader a game you buy?" that is because tmodloader before existing on steam was a free add on to terraria and making it have to be bought would ruin alot of the reason tmodloader on steam exists

Yeah, isn't that the point of gifting games to other people? So they don't have to buy it at all? That's another question I have, is there a way my friend could install it the old way by going to the forum page, or is everything only on steam now?

if you don't own a game, how are you supposed to play it with mods? that would be like buying all the DLC for a game without buying the game to play them on.

with that logic i could own a game simply by buying a $1 DLC item for it. doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

also, the game is on sale right now, just gift him that

FYI. and this is straight from TModLoader store page.

"Community-Made Mod
This community-made mod requires that you own Terraria .

Do you people not understand? My friend was gifted the game, meaning someone else paid for it. Does that not count as owning it? It's in his steam library, so I'm pretty sure he owns he, he just didn't pay for it, because it was gifted . I own the game, why would I download it again?

Idk why people aren't reading the "it was gifted" bit. But assuming you can't figure it out and steam keeps being useless, you can always use the original version from the forum, which is a manual installation rather than using Steam. It's pretty simple to set up, just paste it over the vanilla game, overwrite any files that already exist, and you're done. https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/1-3-tmodloader-a-modding-api.23726/

It also seems like you're not understanding, so let me put it in the simplest most detailed speech I can:

My friend (not me) was gifted Terraria (someone else purchased the game and gave it to him), and he now owns the game in his steam library.
When he tries to install tmodloader, steam says he must first own the game (which he does, it was gifted to him (someone else purchased it and gave it to him)).

No answers have been given here, only people who don't seem to be able to read 3 sentences.

I thank you for managing to read through the painful 3 sentences explaining my friend's problem. I have told him to try and send a support ticket to steam, and if that doesn't work I will go ahead with the manual installation. The reason I wanted to avoid this was because I was not use if it would overwrite his Terraria 1.4 files.

I'm assuming so as we were able to play 1.4 together
