An actual ranged weapon, buffs, accessories, and arena

This is not at all the case, I play mainly summoner and there are plenty of viable options pre-mech in calamity. Just make sure to fight cryogen to get the Daedalus Armor and have good summon acc. before the fight(s). Potions are always helpful (especially for summoner). I recommend the Ice Chunk as your weapon of choice (33% drop from Ice Claspers).

wouldn’t spider armpit be better as it allows you to spawn more minions

I personally play with other mods with Calamity as the main mod. I can't for the life of me remember what exact mod it is, but there's an item called Caesar's Crown, that gives you extra health and defense for every summon you have. This coupled with Beladonas (my personal favorite because they will kill everything off screen and on screen) and a weird bug that included their ammo as summons, usually meant I was unkillable except for instant death effects. However, strictly speaking, I do remember trying out essentially every summon weapon and if you look at the class guide on the wiki, you have 6 options.

Ancient Ice Chunk (kinda good, but I think they require line of sight even if they will technically go through blocks)
Black Hawk Remote (don't actually care about blocks and are a pretty decent upgrade over beladonas)
Caustic Staff (great for applying debuffs and that's it)
Forgotten Apex Wand (I think I tried it, but it felt super underwhelming)
Shellfish Staff (I specifically hate and despise this one because it requires the shellfish to actually be able to attach to the boss. If it does, congrats, now just wait for the boss to die or more likely for the shellfish to fall off somehow because you went just out of range)
Queen Spider Staff (okay turret. just make sure you place it high)

With that said though, I do recommend getting a mod that adds in class bonuses and levels to your chosen class to really make whatever class you pick shine.
