With the map secure, build lumbermills and mines everywhere with storage beside them for faster resource drop off, sell wood with your market for gold to get tier 3 town center, build workshops around to speed up your resource acquisition. Build stone wall 1 around the entire map perimeter, build a few builder huts near each map edge to speed this along a bit, and purchase 8 trebuchets, 12 catapults and 8 ballista. Whenever you get a big wave, send those siege weapons along with about 60 crossbowmen to repulse the attack. When you are secure and the resources are pouring in you can train the foot knights and spearmen you need, ans build the boats
Clearing the map gets you the green emerald thingies. The laser can kill like the first 3 or 4 waves.
Just build some of the tall guard towers for vision wait till you see everything and then blast em.
I built the ships when i had an excess of materials, early on its pretty easy to get an abundance of wood, so you can start them off.
But after that i was focusing on economy and building an army to clear the map faster.
Ofc as you clear the map you get more space and access to more resources.
The constant waves that come from the drunkards is like 15-20 guys at a time, you don't need much to hold that off, so once the maps clear you can focus on the ships.
To me there are two main objectives:
- The Ships (duh!)
- Sorting out the steady stream from the south.
Other thing is to understand the map shape. There is a lot of coast and once you have cleared the locals out they are 'relatively' safe to build in. The hordes do not seem to spawn from those areas and often by pass them completely. So you can build a small self contained resource area - woodcutters and miners + stockpile and food + grainary - and never have to defend. Your builders need to be able to reach that area, but once built your worker dudes just walk to the stockpile and back.
So, the South. If you have played the map before you should have a good idea where these attacks come from. Push out and clear yourself space in the early game and then start setting up your defences early. Once the attacks start kicking in you will not get time to build new defences so you will need to have that area self managing pretty quickly. Build and add new units steadily.
So the other big need is the actual mission - build the ships AND build the troops.
Important bit is to get the Knights you need to level up your town hall and barracks up to III.
This means you will need Gold which means you will need the Market as soon as possible as well.
Defending against the hordes can be done by local defences. Build your Murder Ball as fast as practical. I disbanded the archers once I got crossbows unlocked (look at the stats - crossbows do over twice the base damage - so after early game they are just using up manpower, using up space in your towers and risking death in combat).
Work out where the horde is coming from, move the Murder Ball to the area, build a tower and some wall segments and those wooden platforms to put your catapults onto. The hordes start having their own siege engines very soon into the game (first wave?). I found spawning the ghost knights on top of their catapults a way to keep them from doing too much damage while you deal with the mass of foot.
Don't get too attached to your first towers. You need the space on the map for new mines so you need to push out during the mid game. So go minimal for the early waves cause you will expand past them during the middle game.
Use the Murder Ball to clear camps and get the gems and carts between waves. Leave troops in the defences in the south full time as the time between waves drops to about 30 seconds, but once you have dealt with a horde pull all but a token one or two cross bow off the walls and back into your murder ball.
Aim to build the high end siege engines - so build the engineering camp thing and upgrade when you get the moment.
In my successful run I built the university. I found this useful as this unlocks some good defensive buffs in the tech tree.
Micro Manage your market to get your town hall upgraded as soon as possible. If you have an excess of one resource trade if for what you are low on.
Also remember you will need 60 crossbow plus the spear plus the knights. So you will need to expand your housing to match.
Hopefully you will successfully get to 'close' at one stage of the game. Ships ready. Most troops built. You will probably have one 'all or nothing' horde to defend. If you are close then don't hold back and use all the gems you collected. The moment the horde is over move all your knights and spear into the ships, make sure you have built enough, then strip out all the crossbow from all your towers and rush them to the ships.
The attacks from the south will still be going so make sure you have enough catapults and walls to delay those attacks while you march your crossbows to the ships. Also note each ship has a finite amount of space. I didn't notice for a while and had troops standing on the docks doing nothing.
HOPEFULLY you have timed it right and everyone will rush onto the ships and WIN.
YA.
Then watch the cut scene where all your ships get eaten by sea monsters on the campaign map.
Disclaimers:
Only won once.
Only won after nerf patch.
Not played on the Adult Difficulties.
I assume - and open to correction - that the Adult Difficulties are the same but with a greater need to be utterly ruthless with your growth in the early and mid games.
