It's like Age of Empires, but you aren't playing against another player. Instead you defend your city against waves of enemies, usually while having some other objective that requires you to move troops across the map (eg. fight a boss).

I will still give this a recommend because the game IS fun and there's a sandbox mode outside of the campaign. The campaign itself is quite nice design-wise. It has branching storylines offering replay-ability with different endings.

But be warned it is VERY difficult. This is my one real critique with the game and im sure plenty of negative reviews are because of this very point. The easiest difficulty of the game is already unbeatable for like 98% of the playerbase and this is shown through the global achievement percentages. I don't understand why the "walk in the park" difficulty is scaled to be still so difficult and there are even 4 difficulty tiers above that. To beat this game you will have to:

• Micromanage your resources the entire game. If you miss some timings you will lose out big time.
  
• Be very mindful about where you build all your buildings
  
• Micromanage your troops
  
• Sometimes even need to re-roll your map so that you get optimal resource node or base position spawns

It just shouldn't be like this on the easiest difficulty and it's not a hard fix either. Simply just increase the number days before waves hit on lower difficulties.

Its a horde defence, quite similar to They are billions, plays the same way with a different skin.

very hard game, personally i was hoping more for castle building with defence thrown in there. but this is a pure horde game that emphasises rushing and stressing hard to get the perfect build order so you are not resource starved. good for High apm ADHD people

New to RTS/ Hoard Survival RTS games? Avoid.
Seasoned Vet of the Genre? Avoid.

The game has 5 difficullties, but they don't actually matter because the easiest difficulty is still incredibly difficult and if you're just looking for a casual time with a cartoony game, you won't find anything casual here. As a seasoned RTS gamer (Starcraft 1/ 2, Beyond All Reason, Command and Conquer, etc.) AND Hoard Survival RTS (They Are Billions) the actual RTS mechanics are fine, but the difficulty scaling is so stupid. Again, even on the lowest difficulty. And that is my issue.

This game is not a friendly experience to those whop have never played this style of game. They can't even get introduced because the difficulty settings mean nothing. One mission even forced you into the "normal" setting, but it still forced you to choose a difficulty setting (of which there was 1).

The ai is also incredibly stupid. The randomly generated maps cause for either an OP experience, or just a massive resource dump to defend/ farm. T3 is almost always pointless because maps tend to not last long enough to need what T3 offers. Archers/ Bowmen all attack the same enemy, including overkill, so they're actually pretty useless against hoards. Catapults often shoot your gates, so the enemies AT the gates can't be hit. This does no damage to your buildings/ units, but it just wastes the shots.

This game feels incomplete. They made it, ignored any concept of balance and moved on.

The games actual mechanics only fall under "acceptable" for me. As an RTS the game is okay? Multiple types of resources to juggle, though food almost always causes an issue. The maps are so small by the time you get farms up you've expanded to so much of the map, yet you don't have resources to segment parts of the city off with walls like other hoard survival RTS games.

overall it feels unbalanced and incomplete. I wanted so much to love it. I can't. I can't love a game where it's RNG and spending hours in a map on the easiest difficulty, and the AI for the things supposed to crowd control are too stupid to actually CC.
