More entrance points > more space for building city > more resources and firepower
Firepower (especially per used space) and bottlenecks are crucial
Food outpost are crucial too, if you can place safe functioning farms outside of main base it will help alot
Early game and recouces spawns doesnt take any sufficient effort if you are good enough at reckon and kiting small groups
Sure you can only have so many towers for units, but most of the advantage that towers give can be off set by the lower exposure of DPS on you. this may take longer to clear waves but you wont need as many resources dedicated to defense, letting you have more for offense and Economy.
Using Safe zones is also key my fav use of them is sight towers since most of the time if you use them for anything that has worker use enemies can follow them to the safe zone and eliminate it altogether during waves where you cant react to save it.
Safe zones are best as areas where waves wont interact with. this could be large wall formations, or even corners of the map if the edge is preventing spawn. many of the later missions have this.
