How do I side with Sarranga in the campaign?

They don't do a very good job explaining it, I figured it out purely on accident. On the first level where you fight Sarranga, there's a wave that comes to attack you immediately on the first day, just don't attack this wave, let them reach your castle without hurting their units at all, and then you'll get a cutscene saying you "chose the path of non-violence" and you'll get the choice of whether you want to side with them or not.
