How's multiplayer?

Title's self-explanatory. How are the queue times, do lobbies dc or work stable? Is it possible to progress and collect cars by playing MP and skipping SP entirely? Thanks for honest opinions in advance.

the only thing i heard really threw me off, apparently you can only do a solo time trial on custom maps, so this sadly wont be mario kart meets trackmania...

Ouch, is this really true? Remember Re-Volt? It also has a track builder and you can race on custom tracks with ai.

Getting into multiplayer without having a car you upgraded is frustrating, so you need to play the campaign for the coins and gears. That way you have a chance at getting decent cars and upgrading them so that they become fast enough for multiplayer.

To be honest, multiplayer isn't much great so far since there is no ranked play, a form of ladder or whatever. Milestone will have to work plenty to get this game going.

In multiplayer you can pick one out of 4 randomly made maps from players. So you will play the custom maps of people

Awful. You cannot for example decide “I want to join a Ready Set Go race”. Instead you have to join a random lobby which could be any random track. So it takes between 2-4 hours until you find a lobby with the exact track you want. Creating a lobby is pointless as it seems nobody joins.
