You have to use that car in a certain race. The secret "?"s on the map explain the event combinations you need.
I figured that the secrets maybe required the specific vehicles mentioned in the descriptions but since the game only allows you to select the vehicle AFTER you've selected the event then how do you do this for the secret ones? The secret events are locked out so I cannot select these then pick the vehicle it requires to race them...
"Amazing Drivers: with special appearance by Motosaurus."
Basically what you need to do is play the 'Amazing Drivers' event with the Motosaurus.
Same applies for any other "?" icon with this type of description.
I get having secrets in the game. But, this is really poor design locking progression behind secrets that are vague and a chore to find. Very poorly explained
Edit: Okay, so I managed to find the "Amazing Drivers" one, but the others elude me. I'm going to assume these are races that I'll most likely find after this secret. Which means that secrets are locked behind secrets. Ugh...
I guess I'll spoiler tag this, just in case anyone here doesn't want to know.
After you beat the ghost boss, a secret space will unlock on the left of the map. From there, two missions are nearby. One you have to beat with Bone Shaker and another you have to beat with Buns of Steel. There's a third secret where you have to beat a mission called "Top Secret," but you can beat that with any car, and soon you'll access the Hot Wheels High vehicle.
Beat the very first race in the entire campaign again, only this time with Hot Wheels High, and a secret on the right side of the map will unlock.
This does highlight though a serious flaw in the campaign progression in my view because unless you unlock these secret events (and understand how they are unlocked) then you can come to a grinding halt like I did.
The problem isn't the secret events or how they are unlocked, though in my humble view it might have been more obvious how to unlock them if the map actually displayed the event names next to the icon instead of only showing when you move the cursor over said icon. No, the problem is these really should be separate from the campaign progression or at the end of a string of events, like the Rewards.
The last thing you want is to hit a literal brick wall while playing through the campaign because the game does not properly explain what it is you have to do and makes it less obvious by hiding the event names on the map which can only be viewed a small part at a time, requiring the user to tediously look through all unlocked event icons to find the one specific to the secret event.
It is a bizarre decision really to have the campaign progression require these secret events be unlocked before you can access other events. This almost ruined the game for me as I replayed earlier unlocked events, including the challanging Time Attacks, on harder difficulties because I thought that was the only way to progress past these secrets.
I thought someone mentioned that the vehicles needed for the secret events cannot be sold or scrapped, which makes sense if these are tied to the campaign progression. If the game allows these vehicles to be sold/scrapped then that is another design flaw because the currency needed to buy new vehicles is measly plus the vehicles mostly unlock through (annoying!) loot boxes.
Milestone do make some good games and Hot Wheels Unleashed could well be their best yet but they also seem to make some very strange design choices at times, at least in my opinion.

Why do developers think players enjoy loot boxes/random drops anyway?
There has been a massive backlash against these over the last two years, mostly because they are usually tied to microtransactions, but did Milestone really think that's what gamers want?
Micro machines V1 and V2 had the same concept, so its not a new idea for this, you could even pink slip cars. If it isnt tied to real money I don't overly see a problem, besides you can buy cars in the shop that you don't have.
Never played Micro Machine V1 and V2 unfortunately, only that dreadful Micro Machines that was released on PC a couple of years ago and quickly forgotten about...
You only have a limited selection of vehicles you can buy from the Shop though in Hot Wheels Unleashed - a choice of 5, I believe - and then these have a countdown so they change after a while. It's not like you can browse through all the vehicles in the game or the ones you've unlocked through the campaign and choose exactly which ones you want.
Personally, I am not a big fan of random unlocks because it usually means that you have to invest a lot more time in the games in order to get everything out of them. I'm fine with these in something like Diablo III though as those games drop so much loot that it adds to the addiction of playing the game to see what comes next and it isn't usually long before you get it. In this game though you seem to get a lot of rewards for completing events but they really aren't as generous as they appear as you need a lot of the various currencies to be able to buy a vehicle from the five in the shop or even upgrade the ones you have. The game does seem to lean toward grinding in my view, another criticism that is aimed at games that feature loot boxes.
