Some of the feedback we have received so far for Ultimate ADOM is about the supposedly lack of complexity compared to the original ADOM (Ancient Domain of Mystery).
For sure, it's easy to see, where that perception might come from:
Unlike ADOM's multiple dungeons and expansive overworld, in Ultimate ADOM, there is one single dungeon.
However, this single Dungeon offers a huge variety and number of several branches, which are both optional and mandatory.
Additionally, the original code of the classic ADOM prevented us to add even more complex elements, that simply would help letting you do, whatever you like and we want you to experience.
Not to mention that we also wanted to bring Ultimate ADOM a step forward in the present, and therefore we also have added gamepad support. This is totally new to the game and also takes some time, with the advantage of having old and new (ADOM) players, enjoying the game as never before.
Summed up, being seemingly confined in a single, deadly environment and being more accessible when it comes to controls does not limit the complexity of the game.
Actually the opposite ist he case, as Ultimate ADOM: Caverns of Chaos' underlying (new) logic engine allows it to simulate things that have never been possible with ADOM before.
But let us have a closer look into this:
Open fire has a variety of uses not fully implemented yet, but which will be added, when ‚elemental combination effects‘ hit our Early Access roadmap.
Bumping into burning braziers will cause the oil to spill to neighboring spaces depending on the direction of the bump, potentially setting poorly positioned enemies aflame. Please note that monsters will occasionally also stumble into these things, making fighting near braziers a dangerous, but potentially rewarding tactical choice - unlike in ADOM Classic, monsters now have access to exactly the same skills and actions as the player character.
You even will be able to coat your weapon with a healing potion, in case an enemy disarms you, picks up your blade and decides to pummel you with it. It's all about being prepared, and while these are all instances which had to be hard-coded in ADOM, Ultimate ADOM's logic engine will just allow you to do all of this, because it's possible to simply interact with all the objects in the game.
There's one major change though: we will not have any "unidentified" potions or scrolls anymore. While some players enjoyed the challenge of finding out over and over again, if a certain potion is poison or healing this game session, most did not enjoy experimenting over and over again and we decided that in the ‚Caverns of Chaos‘, potions are clearly labelled this time.
It will be already in the game, when we hit Early Access on February the 11th.
While every character (for now) starts out with two arms, two legs, a torso and a head, they do not need to remain like this for long. Powerful enemies skilled in wielding bladed weapons (especially axes) may score a lucky hit, sending limbs flying.
Additionally, some characters specializing in this may graft monster bodyparts to themselves, because what's better than wielding two axes? Wielding four axes, one for each arm you could eventually run around with. Found a really cool helmet, but it's too small for your regular head? Kill a kobold, butcher its corpse and graft its head onto your shoulders. You now have a slot for wearing a smaller helmet.
Spare weapons, coffins, corpses, or even the walls of the dungeon itself - as long as you have enough spare power points available; a wizard specializing in Animancy will never have to be alone.
You might even cut off a minotaur's arm in combat, animate it and let it fight its original owner, if you are feeling particularly cruel.
So while the dungeon's scope itself is a bit smaller compared to all the different locations of ADOM Classic (for now, because developing roguelikes is something, one does not simply stop developing, just because it's ‚feature complete‘), we have added all the fun and complex bits we couldn't add to the classic ADOM due to the code simply not allowing us to add all the complexity.
And there's a lot more to come! Stay tuned and be prepared!
ADOM-Fans!
Seid also gespannt.
* Play with fire - I like this, looking forward to seeing how deeply it is implemented. Hopefully the idea will be rounded out to include other elements, with broad interaction possible with water, electricity, etc.
* Grafting, Limbs and meaningful critical hits - Gotta say, if feels a bit more Nethack than ADOM but I'm willing to give it a chance.
* Animate everything - Sounds interesting though could mean slow and unwieldy game play, which is most definitely not my play style. Will work well if implemented with a minimum of micromanagement. Having to direct the actions of animated items every turn does not sound appealing to me.
One request I have is to allow the player the ability to map the keyboard. I >hate< that spells keep getting remapped as I add to my library of knowledge. I want Burning Hands to always be 'a', Fire Bolt always 'b', etc. I do not want Fire Bolt to be 'b', then get shifted to 'c' once I have Fireball.
thank you for your feedback.
-> Will be possible. Players should be able to enjoy and experience the game the way they want. However, for the veterans of the genre, we also have the option to remember all keys. We don't judge you. :)
-cheers
So far, as players being familiar with ADOM in general, there's a huge surface world with multiple dungeons, quests ranging from saving puppies from deadly caves to befriending water dragons with multiple choices along the way.
Caverns of Chaos starts right at the entrance to the titular caverns, with the characters sent into the infested depths for a reason between them and their faction choices.
Quest chains will require player decisions and change the flow of the game accordingly.
The Original ADOM has a lot of different endings: Slay the evil God of ChAoS, usurp his throne or even destroy the universe.
- While we feel it's okay to spoiler a game that's been out for nearly thirty years now, we're going to keep quiet about the different endings you will be able to achieve in Ultimate ADOM.
However, please be assured there will also be different endings, including some which require a bit of outside-the-box thinking and experimentation.
It will be possible to end the game by simply slaughtering everything, if your character is sufficiently powerful and warded, though this may not be the most satisfying and valuable ending.
- But hey, it is possible and mirroring the way we want to go with Ultimate ADOM: giving the player as much choice as possible to play the game.
While the classic ADOM is a game focused deeply on exploring a large variety of dungeons, we want to put Ultimate ADOM's emphasis on cool gameplay mechanics. Regarding complexity, please feel free to read the recently released DevBlog, but there are also a lot of different environments to explore in the Caverns of Chaos!
Players of our Alpha might have already discovered the Minor Chaos Temple located somewhere near the kobold caves, or the strange and deadly waters of Lake Gloom, sorry, no more spoilers!
All of these areas - and many more - will feature questlines that are local or affect the whole dungeon and your faction's main story. So there is plenty to explore, and not everything will be available to visit every time you venture into the dungeon.
But that's something for much later!
there is no demo. What you mean is a quite early (pre-)Alpha version of the game, which already by the name indicates being far away from a demo and finished game in general.
What is next is an Early Access, giving a more advanced version, however even, or especially an Early Access Game is still right in development and is not a final game in any kind of way.
So, if you prefer a fully released game, which is not in development, an Alpha-version, Beta-Version or Early Access would be nothing to look for, as those are versions of a game, that are, as said already, right in development and are far from done. :)
