Levels in Drakensang have different purpose than in majority of RPGs - they determine how much XP you get for defeating enemies (at some point you don't get any experience for killing weak monsters), how far can you develop hero's talents (there is a cap for all talents which gets higher when you level up) and in case of spells limit their power (Balm of Healing can cure 1 wound per 3 levels of the caster).
Character development depends on your choices - you use XP points gained to improve your stats.

1st Expert mode has nothing to do with it. All Expert mode does is let you manually change the start numbers on your skills. Like all characters start with brawling and dagger skill points. I lower those as far as I can and use those spare points to up some other skill I know will be more useful.

Leveling.
- In the normal sense as your character is level 1, 2, 3 etc.... that's automatic. You don't have to do anything. When you have enough AP you go up a level (you need 500 AP to make level 2, 100 for lvl 3 etc...)

- Training skills (or what I think you're saying 'leveling up your talents'): There are various trainers in the cities; fighter, mage, crafting etc.... Depending upon what you want to learn you go to that trainer.

There's a few in the starter town you begin in, Holbert? They Mercenary that wants you to fight him, beat him and be becomes a trainer, Aurellia the Herb gal in the center and later before you leave the zone a Dwarf blacksmith.

Each skill, skill level costs AP, so you go to the trainer you want and look at what they offer. If you have enough AP that skill will be lighted and you can learn it.

For improving that skill be it swords, pick pocket etc.... you open you character panel's ability page and use the arrows by the skill to raise it after you've unlocked the page by clicking on the red wax seal on the page.

NOW skills are tied into your attributes so if your attribute for that skill is low they'll be a cap on how high the skill can go.

So it's all a balancing act, raise this attribute in order to raise that skill.

I'd recommend going into your steam library and clicking on the game manual for a read to understand it all.

There really aren't; human, elf, dwarf, middle eastern and the viking for races / classes and then each of those has 3 different 'styles'.

Classes are pretty much race locked as you can't start a dwarf battlemage for example only a human one.

What's nice is via training you can create pretty much any mix you want.

To some extent only - I tried to experiment with different classes and Holdwin as a sword fighting trainer. Sadly those who were unskilled from the beginning could only reach 4th talent level at 1st character level.
The above somewhat ties each character to particular weapon type.

While there are some restrictions (like some elf or human only magic), with the various follow on trainers in the other cities (the farther you go in the game the more advanced weapons stuff you can learn) you can pretty much do what you want.

I've turned Dranor into a heavy armor wearing 2 handed monster while still keeping his pick pocket, trap disarm and lock picking up.

It's possible but probably you could have increased his fencing weapons talent higher than any other weapon talent. Farfara's rapier obtained in Moorbridge which can inflict wounds is deadly weapon, however I prefer to have Gladys in my party.
I've determined that Forgrimm has good potential in 2H axes&maces and plan to utilize it.
