Thought I could handle the game but it's too scary for me.
Constantly screeching zombies that jump behind me, the feeling of helplessness when I clearly don't have the ammo to deal with more than handful of zombies, the dark time, the weakness of melee.

I know that this is supposed to be the whole point, and it does it well, and I do enjoy the human fights and the story, but the zombies are just far too scary.

I guess you haven't reached the point yet where you have to eliminate three hordes to continue the story? I was about to give up there because of sheer panic but then I figured out how to kill them all and from then on everything else was a walk in the park. Also what I did was when I fought the hordes, I turned the volume down and listened to music on the side. They can't scare you if you don't hear them. They're just pixels :D

I usually don't get actually scared by games, movies, etc, but the first time I used eagle vision at the mill and saw it was full of freaks, I felt it in my bones.

Melee weapons are a balance between damage and durability, with each variable being inversely proportional to the other; as damage potential increases, durability decreases.

I'm a fan of machetes and Ripper axes, as they have a near 50/50 balance. BUT, you may need a little extra as it sounds like you're facing your 'Kobayashi Maru'.

So, my suggestion is for you to do a 'Kirk'; Get over to nexusmods.com, download and install this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/daysgone/mods/630 that reworks all melee weapons. Try it out and see how you get on.

On the subject of fear; it is the Devil on your shoulder, telling you to hang back and not have a scary experience, but if you play it safe all through life, everyday will blur into one.

I've also found that, once you can repair your melee weapon, it isn't very hard to keep a high-damage weapon functional.

During my entire playthrough on hard I almost never used melee weapons (27 kills total). They're just not worth it. Costs 5 scrap to repair and needs more than 1 hit to kill anything but newts. 5 scrap is 25 bolts, which kills most things in one hit with the knocked up skill. It is also silent, which is not the case with melee.
