I'm a fan of machetes and Ripper axes, as they have a near 50/50 balance. BUT, you may need a little extra as it sounds like you're facing your 'Kobayashi Maru'.
So, my suggestion is for you to do a 'Kirk'; Get over to nexusmods.com, download and install this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/daysgone/mods/630 that reworks all melee weapons. Try it out and see how you get on.
On the subject of fear; it is the Devil on your shoulder, telling you to hang back and not have a scary experience, but if you play it safe all through life, everyday will blur into one.
I've also found that, once you can repair your melee weapon, it isn't very hard to keep a high-damage weapon functional.
