I have been able to play the game for well over 20 hours and it has been running well, but when I was starting it today I got this error. I googled it and tried many of the solutions (debug mode, downgrading my Nvidia driver, restarting PC), but nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Right now I'm trying to reinstall the game. I will update if that actually works, but I'm not feeling hopeful.

Edit: Reinstalling the game did not work.

Have you tried any other games? If you get this in other games with some regularity, card might have gone kaput (the VRAM iirc); happened to me. I tried everything involving software before RMAing, which I had to struggle for.

I know it's a pain in the ass, but try other games and if it doesn't occur there then it's definitely this game. I can see that you've already tried messing with software to no avail. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your reply! It seems like I'm indeed having issues in other games as well. Metro Exodus is also crashing when I start it, and while Age of Empires II DE is running, it's having some weird graphic glitches.

Is it a new graphics card I have to buy to fix this?

Begin RMA process immediately, provide evidence by recording with your phone (trust me) and capturing these crashes and artefacts, also provide the driver crash logs in Windows Event Viewer.

If your PC is a prebuilt they might ask to 'test' it. Do NOT allow them to run their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ benchmarking software as it will not pick anything up. Create a specific list of all the games that have this issue on your PC. Eventually, I had to send my PC back for a third time because the company tried to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me with their benchmarking software that didn't recreate the crashes. Make sure they test your PC with the exact games you're having an issue with!

I have had the most new parts in my computer since 2016-2017, so I'm pretty sure the warranty period has expired for all parts. I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and I read on the Nvidia homepage that the warranty period is only 3 years.

So do you think the graphics card is the only problem or could it be something else? Do you think it's possible to fix it by cleaning it or will I have to buy a new one?

Sorry to hear that, yeah 3 years is typical period for warranty. If you're getting artefacting along with the crashes, all signs point towards hardware failure.

I'd try a fresh reinstall of NVIDIA drivers with DDU and if that doesn't work last ditch attempt would be a Windows reinstall (total wipe, don't keep any files and back them up on a HDD). Otherwise, I think it's time for a new GPU sadly.

3 long shots to try if you hadn't already?

Check for Windows Updates in settings and click that "check for updates" button. In my experience that update page often shows no updates when there are some available.

Try running Windows SFC in command prompt or powershell
It's built in windows to let your PC check and restore any corrupt Windows System files.
Its resolved many odd and seemingly unrelated things for my work PCs. (sysadmin)
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-sfc-scannow-command-fix-problems-windows-10

Probably won't make a difference - but do your games still have issues after you uninstall just the GeForce Experience software and reboot PC?
If any game needs a special setting (ie. custom fps limit#) the Nvidia control panel (icon on taskbar by time/date) still provides all of that functionality by manually editing global settings also can be done per game.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that it's a hardware issue. I can add that my computer crashed and I heard some strange noises right before these issues. I just didn't want to mention it in the original post because I was hoping for a solution that does not involve buying a new graphics card.

I'm going to try the steps you suggested tomorrow in the morning even if it's a long shot, though!

My GPU broke. I bought an old cheap GPU for $10 until I can afford a better model. Now my game is at least running, although my game is unfortunately lagging too much for me to enjoy it. So I'm putting Days Gone on the shelf and enjoying other games for now. Looking forward to finish it later this year, though!

Before doing an RMA, or buying another graphics card, check your graphics card drivers.

Not often, but not rarely either, the latest driver update can cause graphics glitches. This is usually resolved with the next update.
Try rolling back to the last driver update to see if the issue persists.
If that doesn't work, try uninstalling ALL graphics drivers, then install fresh drivers instead of an update. Use DDU to completely remove all traces of the graphics drivers.

I did already try to reinstall my GPU drivers. Thing is, the monitor will not even start when the old GPU is plugged in. So I'm pretty sure it's broken.

My old rig, which I gave to my daughter and family, has just done the same thing.
It's an old AMD FX8300, GTX 750ti, which I used mainly for net surfing and older games like Tomb Raider 2013 and then Days Gone. It doesn't even meet minimum specs for Days Gone, but the game played quite well, taking my rigs shortcomings into account. No serious graphics problems anyway.
So they'd had my old rig for about 6 months, working fine, then suddenly they got the 'no signal' on the monitor. After trying several things, trying a different cable, reseating the card, I got them a new graphics card and cable. There's only so much you can do with no display at all. Can't get any updates to Windows or drivers or anything else.

I suspect the GPU broke because my PSU has been having issues. Shortly after putting in the new GPU, I had a crash and power surge warning. So I took it out and replaced it with a new one I bought. I did try a final time to plug my GTX 1060 after putting in the new PSU, but the monitor still did not start.

Shame about the GPU, but pretty cool community here where everyone wanted to help.
My old PC also used AMD FX8300 but I just got new PC last month because of the many sales, haven't seen the tech industry so flooded with options and genuine sales since the early 2000s so hope the OP caught one on sale. :summer2021simulation:

If you are in Australia you can try to have your card fixed under our Statutory Guarantees which over rule manufacturer warranty. They exist to ensure when you buy a product that should last years and is sold as premium or whatever - that it does as it should.
