Aye! It's right after that mission. But if you don't go to that particular yellow mission marker, you can go where you want to. Your mini-map will guide you to that marker automatically. You have to either ignore the mini-map, or reset your destination. So you can go to a camp, make sure you've got the weapons you want and be fully bombed up, ready to take that horde on. Then come back to that mission marker.
What triggers the reacher and the horde, is Coops dying. So before you get to Coops, explore a bit. Go up that big step and find the right cave, it has a narrow gap to squeeze through at the back. Make sure you know the route, then go to Coops. The horde can circle round and come at you when you go through that gap. But there are good shooting spots both sides, so fire off a full mag, go through the gap, reload....
Yeh! Sounds like a glitch. There are quite a lot of freakers in that horde, but not that many. I'd guess at around 100 but that's going by my dodgy memory, it's been several months since I last did that mission.
