There's loads of stuff to explore for. Even though it's a compressed Oregon, the views are fantastic. Just take your time, quite a lot of work went into the DG World, it's worth a look, IMHO :)
Random attacks are part of the game. And that wasn't a 'horde' of zombies, just a fairly large group who've been attracted to the noise. Keep your ears open and an eye on the mini-map. If it suddenly starts to go red, hide and go silent. Let the zombies kill the rippers (or whoever) for you, a lot of zombies will be killed too. Wait for the excitement to die down, then emerge and mop up whatever's left. I've killed a camp by leading a load of zombies into the camp. It wasn't planned, heading for the camp I got surprised by a large group, gunned the bike away, then slowed down to let then catch up, into the camp and gunned it away.
You start out with a junker bike. Improving the bike improves the speed and everything else, which makes it harder to handle. You'll adapt to it fairly quickly.
NERO, there are several research sites that require using the bike to jump a gap. The higher your speed, the easier the jump. Which means upgrading the bike. For at least 1 jump, maybe 2, you need the top engine plus maxed out nitro.
I would suggest the challenges for a higher tempo experience if you want to get deep into the action asap. The only downside being, if you master these, the core game seem easy, even on the hardest difficulties.
Good guidance from the other two
If you avoid the (?) and only stick to what is shown on the map or at least the road you'll have a good time. I played on hard for my first time and I was getting wrecked by everything, every situation was very tense.
I tought the driving was really good and smooth. You just have to drift every single curve you encounter and that's it. Once the bike is upgraded it become more and more uncontrollable, but it's due to the fact that every bump on the road will make you go flying, but by that time you'll have enough experience under the belt to know the map and know the bike too.
