'Your' bike is your bike, you can't do anything to a picked up beater bike. You'd have to go back for your own bike, which can be improved as you progress. You have to improve your trust level and earn credits by doing jobs for the camps, sending rescued survivors to the camps and cashing in ears and food. Lost Lake doesn't give you credits for sending them survivors. The best upgrades are saved for the highest trust level (3), as are the best weapons. Once you buy a weapon, you can find it in any gun locker, you can also buy the ammunition for it (a game magic thing).
Ah I see. Thanks, I guess that's the answer I was looking for. Not what I was hoping for, but oh well. I figured since they gave me a beater bike at the start, I might just be able to swap it if I find a better one, and go on and upgrade that, but that would require a similar chart to the weapons, which would show you the upgrades each bike has.
Yes, I figured out that much on my own, just not the bike thing, since the game doesn't explain it. Kinda wish the game would let you store weapons you find out in the world in those lockers as well, the way Far Cry does, because the ones I can buy so far are pretty much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
I also noticed that when you loot a police car for ammo, it always magically has whatever type your currently equipped primary weapon uses.
I don't think you can loot other bikes, the only options I saw were to sabotage them or ride them. I got ambushed by some marauders while clearing out the nests at the forest camp, and once I killed them I noticed they had left their bikes parked out by the road. When I walked up to them, it showed me the engine condition and fuel level, like with my own bike, but instead of the repair option there was a sabotage option, and when I used that, Deacon would fiddle with the engine for a while until smoke started coming out and the bike was presumably dead.
I'm pretty sure there was also an option to ride it, however, I just wasn't sure whether there was any point to it. Some of them looked a lot better than my own (beefier tires and offroad frame), others looked decidedly worse.
You have the option to ride other bikes while yours i gone, after that it is more rare and most the bikes you come across will be dead and and not able to be ridden.
