Hordes dont regenerate so you can dwindle them down and dont have to worry if you break the engagement for a bit.

Hopefully you're doing the Sawmill Horde when prompted to by the game. Not because it's a horde you want to kill off. If you enjoy killing hordes, that's fine, carry on
The Sawmill Horde is a story line horde. If you kill it off before the story asks/tells you to, it'll regenerate and you'll have to kill it off again.

Yes story requirement will regenerate, but i seriously doubt anyone it taking on that horde the first play though before the game tells you. It is fascinating how the first couple times you encounter a horde it is terrifying, but in NG+ i went right for them soon as i dropped off boozer.

Relatively new to the game, the other day, I beat this horde by accident with far less trouble than it is supposed to be.

Long story short, I fell off the cliff into the reservoir, but swam to the bottom of the cliff. There is a small amount of land to stand on, and freakers jumped into the water to get to me, but sank right to the bottom, but didn't die.

I made my way to the dam and climbed up, then killed the stragglers at the top, then stood at the top and did some redneck fishing, using survival vision to point out where the freakers were, and tossed frags and pipe bombs on them.

Easy piece of cake, even if it was accidental.
