You can buy/find supressors for weapons so if you want to go stealth you can use a sniper rifle with a supressor or just knife people down.
A non-lethal bolt or a missed shot from the crossbow will alert most human foes. I have never had a problem attracting freakers by making too much noise with gun fire despite the constant warnings by the game.
You can use a rifle until you get each bolt type, then swap to crossbow to gain the trophy, and then back to a rifle again obviously.
If you're careful with your shots and stay hidden you very rarely alert the enemies to your position. Oh and very rarely do i use the other weapons, melee here and there.
Yeah! It's very slow to load and only 1 shot, which has always been the draw back of a crossbow, even against a long bow. I got the Drifter crossbow, on PC. I'm pretty sure I didn't buy it externally, I just gained the upgrade through playing the game. Look in the locker at their safe house ?? It's a bit quicker to load, but not by much. It might also be a bit more accurate over 'long' range but again, not by much. But that could also be my imagination and I'd just got better through practice.
That said, it's not unusual to be able to lure some mobs to fight others or even attack camps. Sometimes it happens on its own too:

Once I lured an entire horde into Iron Mike's farm and the guards wiped it out in seconds. Apparently, they have the power to oneshot anything even through walls. Anything that comes close is history instantly. I'm keeping that in mind when going for the "kill a horde in less than a minute in survival mode" achievement.
Oh good, I haven't completely lost my marbles then
Nah, it's the one with freaker nest residue, 2nd or 3rd one you unlock. Before going South anyway, so not near NG+
One was the pipe bomb, for sure, because I saw the message and I thought "this will be super useful vs the hordes" but couldn't ever craft a single one, the button didn't show until I completed all the NERO camps. And I remember being able to pick nest residue for a while and all of a sudden I couldn't (not like it said "full" but it didn't even show the icon).
