Gasoline Emergency!
So I understand, it's a post apocalyptic setting and your bike is your life. You run out of gas in the middle of nowhere during the end of the world, you're probably just dead. I can appreciate that the game simulates that as a Survival mechanic but it can make for one of the most painful experiences in a game. I just had to leave my bike behind because I didn't realize fast travel used Gas, I had to walk for almost two hours real time to find a gas can and another hour or so straight back to the bike in a slow jog, a lot of that time was spent killing a horde at level 6 just to find out there wasn't a gas can in the outpost and I had to head to the next settlement. Is there something else I could have done to find gas quicker?

Gas cans are pretty well distributed around the map precissely to avoid that.
You can find them in recovery trucks (they're in the back), in all sorts of camps (I don't know if there are exceptions but you might have blown up the one that was in that outpost you mentioned, but if you're going to look for gas NERO camps always have at least one can there so they're the safest choice) in towns (usually laying around in the outside but sometimes you'll find some on the roofs and inside big houses too), in tunnels (mainly in the forementioned recovery trucks who tend to be there along with ambulances for medkits and cop cars for ammo) and obviously in gas stations (you can fill your gas directly from the pump too and you can also use gasoline barrels that tend to be next to white tanks like the ones in the hightower where you leave boozer).

Now I'm not gonna say it's impossible that you just found the spot that's super far away from every gas can in the game and you have to actually go on a tedious ride to get gas. If that happens again you have two options: reload from a previous save to avoid the trouble and go out more prepared or grab your bike, walk with it towards a road or path that goes downwards and use the momentum to go towards one of the places mentioned above.

Ultimately, if you really have to jog for whatever reason, you can go directly to one of the friendly camps (like Copeland's) and ask the mechanic there to retrieve your bike for 50 credits and then buy gas there.

A nexus mod called "Multiple Fuel Tank Capacities" can help...

"Gives the user selectable increases to their bikes fuel tank capacity.
The variants range from 50% extra, to 250% extra with a variant at every 50% interval."

Ah, good advice. I haven't had anything like that happen since then. I was watching my mini-map for gas icons too but none were showing on it, not even the one I found and used but yeah I should've pushed my bike to a gas station even if it was slower to move, I didn't know better at the time. I was just frustrated. lol The early game is painful but now I think I'm into mid-late, I just took out my first hoard of 400 but it took all my ammo plus 2 storage pouches and I don't have much risk of running out of gas anymore, though ever since this happened I find gas cans everywhere. lol
