Controller doesn't work in only this game

My controller used to work before, it is still recognized by my PC and Steam and works like a charm, but the game simply doesn't react to it. My controller follows the Xbox 360 layout and I manually installed the latest driver. Right after installing it, it worked again, but now I'm back to square one. What else could I try to fix this?

I'm in the same boat friend. It was working just fine a couple of days ago too.

Yeah, same - Just bought the game, I had my old 360 USB pad wired in and that worked ONCE, and never since. My XBox One pad, no joy at all.

If I'd bought on Steam instead of a 3rd party key site you know I'd be refunding right about now, this is some shameful s**t.

Works fine here> Have you opened big picture here on Steam to check your controller is recognised and configured?

I have found a fix guys! Although it is a pinch complicated.
Make sure that the game is turned off.

First, right click on Dead Island in your Library > Properties > Controller > Set to "Disable Steam Input".
Next, go into the Steam settings on the top left > Controller > General Controller Settings > uncheck the configuration support for your respective controller (if enabled). If it still doesn't work, re-enable your respective config support.

I think that it has something to do with Steam overriding the controls and the game then not recognizing it. By turning it off, the game is allowed to just directly look at what the controller is sending. At least this worked for me. Hope it does for you too!

mines similar, i can't shoot a single fire weapon or melee attack more than once without having to open up the quick use menu and re-selecting. Sometimes I can't even attack, it doesn't register. Other games work fine, even went to them immediately after trying to troubleshoot this. Nothing fixes it. It's a ♥♥♥♥ port of a ♥♥♥♥ game, plain and simple.

First make sure the steam properties controller support for game is disabled then in game options controller support is on, restart the game if it don't work & you want the controller on before starting the game.

I had to reinstall the game, and delete the userdata for it to work again...

Make sure you backup your save data to the cloud and maybe even a usb drive to be safe
