Yeah, I agree. You can stealth kill enemies with the knife but in open combat it's worthless. As I said, I've noticed it takes 6-8 hits with the knife to kill a generic freaker. Once you get that upgrade for the knife it MIGHT lower that number down to like 3-4 hits, but overall I see no reason to even use the knife. I always try to make sure I have a field weapon on me like a hammer or machete. I think bladed weapons are superior, so I look for machetes mostly. Sledgehammers feel pretty strong as well, but a machete is the closest thing you'll get to a sword weapon in the game, and I just like carrying it. Makes me feel like a swordsman, wish we had gotten a katana as a "gag weapon" or something.
I tend to always manually switch to it when facing 1 on 1 freakers.
Dodgeroll spam + spamming attack takes less of a toll on your real crafted weapons.
Good early on before you have the scrap repair skill.
