Can I just sleep through or do I need to do something?
Yeah, it's a little misleading on how the stories are set up. There's a ton of side missions, etc. that will come up and will slowly tick away at the progress for that 'main' quest you see initially. Heck even the Leon one takes a bit.
For the horde's you can always wait until they are out and then try to sneak into the area while they're out romping around. The one camp that has railroad tracks above it can be easily cleared once you have some explosives and can most of the horde down inside the railroad cars.
Outside of that, I've mostly tried to avoid the hordes and just grab the Nero loot when they're not around as noted above.
