Molotovs are useless?
half the time you drop it on a group of 10 zombies in a train carriage, they all run through it and 2 die? is this normal? Also only 2 or 3 catch fire....Is there a perk for them or something or do the devs want you to save them for nests?

It does not set the area on fire, it only sets the enemies on fire.

It is very useful, because one molotov can kill 15 zombies, you just use the wrong tactics.
You should try to group the zombies, not stretch across the area.

They were piled on top of eachother in a shipping container asleep at a nest site so they're were not spread out. anyways.

You just need to move on in the story and there you will find some molotov upgrade
its a molotov its fire it spreads so i know this is an old post but no they said they were trying to put realism and guess what fire is supposed to spready

zombies?
"Explosion Tweaks" from Nexus Mods
Molotovs are small beer bottles, like a pint (500ml) size. They don't hold enough to take out a large number of freakers. Later on in the game you'll get a souped up molotov which can.
They're good for taking out freaker nests though
I do gotta say though, even with Molotov 2.0 (my nickname for the better ones from in-game, not a mod) they still feel kinda lack-luster vs hordes and even just tight clumps. The 2.0 molly's are kinda decent when just dumping them over a sleeping horde, but only for about 5 seconds, for (hopefully) obvious reasons :P

The molotov is quite bad, it has a hit limit, if you throw it into a horde, 4-5 gets lit before the molotov fire is "consumed".
if you throw it on the ground it works the same, it leaves a burning area and after 4-5 gets set on fire, the fire just goes away.
huh, I never realised, but that would make sense to how they seem to work. I did wonder why they seemed to be used up immediately, and it felt almost random as to how many it would ignite.

There's one other thing about fire which isn't made clear, enemies on fire take more damage from gunfire etc whilst applying damage over time.

Really useful for taking out the harder enemies, I always use molotovs in combination with an attractor, as it will group them together and stop them running away, and sometimes with a smoke-bomb as it will stop them running at you.
