His wife's the real one. Is he impostor or is he recognized as one because she died? Passives Abilities Attribution in Use Perception-blocking Mask can disguise him as her.

Yes. Angelica was the true Black Silence and Roland's mask caused people to not pay attention to him, making them think he's the Black Silence.

Didn't he gain color status after slaying the pianist? People probably mistook him as Angelica bc of the mask, but he is a legit color.

Extremely not. some people mistook him for The Black Silence because the mask makes him unidentifiable, but he wasn't promoted, in fact the stuff about being a grade 9 fixer isn't a lie, the rampage he went on got him demoted right to the bottom

it's mentioned early in the story (Musicians of Bremen, I think) that The Black Silence (or at least someone matching the description of them) killed the Pianist, It's mentioned later that Roland's wife (Angelica, aka The Black Silence) was one of it's victims, so there's no one else it could've been

That's always been a weird one, maybe her, maybe him, maybe both (like a team)?

Suppose they do fight in unison in phase 3 (even combo-ing attacks), so who knows, could've been a team while people never knew due to the perception-blocking mask (however that works), or they just never specified in the story that they worked as a team.

Guess it's a bit screwy... If "The Black Silence" killed the Pianist, that meant they thought he was the Black Silence, or the title was shared. (Though The Head wouldn't be fooled that easily, they would be able to see through any obstructions the Mask provides.)

Ah well... The timeline and who the title belongs to has always been somewhat unexplained, sadly.

It's pretty explicit actually, the signature weapon of the Black Silence is the gloves, Roland doesn't wear gloves in any of the flashback scenes. the only people that refer to "The Black Silence" killing the Pianist are people like the Musicians of Bremen who have only heard legends about Colours. the people that actually know things refer to "someone matching the description of the Black Silence" making it pretty clear that they know it wasn't actually her, just that there's not much else to describe someone that can't be easily identified, wearing black and using the Black Silence's signature noise suppressing gloves.
Also her meeting Roland was relatively recent, given that they only started working together to deal with the Blood Red Night.
also the artbook outright states that Angelica was the Black Silence and Roland is basically trying to copy her fighting style.

Basically his wife was the Black Silence. However Roland's mask made it so people ignored him, including the Pianist, allowing him to use Angelica's gloves to kill the pianist without issue. This made people think he was the Black Silence when he was just a grade 1 fixer.

However he had a rampage and got demoted to grade 9, then got into the library. His adventures in the library alongside his mask and gloves however, elevated him past the level of a color fixer. I'm sure Angela's new arms and legs also helped out there.

So basically Roland wasn't the original black silence, but now he is much, much more powerful than the original black silence.

I doubt that the mask would've protected him from the Pianist given that it basically just means that he can't be recognised, the actual thing that would've hard-countered the Pianist is the sound dampening effect of the gloves, when the entire threat of the Pianist is its music, being able to just silence it would completely defang any threat it could've posed.

Angelica is the real Black Silence, and the Musicians of Bremen SAY that she killed the Pianist, but she was already dead.

People mistook Roland killing the Pianist as the Black Silence doing so, and with his wife dead and him having her gloves, meant that Roland effectively inherited the title.
If nothing else, his fight with Distorted Argalia shows he has the chops to be a Colour.

If Angelica was the real Black Silence, then who are the real Roland and White Noise?

So he's demoted to Grade 9 but has Color powers? She was lied again. He'll be popcorn machine.

He actually told her about it, but was purposely very vague

Roland doesn't lie much after the first meeting, he just doesn't explain things that aren't asked, and deflects with his "this is this and that is that" line
