Suppose they do fight in unison in phase 3 (even combo-ing attacks), so who knows, could've been a team while people never knew due to the perception-blocking mask (however that works), or they just never specified in the story that they worked as a team.
Guess it's a bit screwy... If "The Black Silence" killed the Pianist, that meant they thought he was the Black Silence, or the title was shared. (Though The Head wouldn't be fooled that easily, they would be able to see through any obstructions the Mask provides.)
Ah well... The timeline and who the title belongs to has always been somewhat unexplained, sadly.
Also her meeting Roland was relatively recent, given that they only started working together to deal with the Blood Red Night.
also the artbook outright states that Angelica was the Black Silence and Roland is basically trying to copy her fighting style.
However he had a rampage and got demoted to grade 9, then got into the library. His adventures in the library alongside his mask and gloves however, elevated him past the level of a color fixer. I'm sure Angela's new arms and legs also helped out there.
So basically Roland wasn't the original black silence, but now he is much, much more powerful than the original black silence.
People mistook Roland killing the Pianist as the Black Silence doing so, and with his wife dead and him having her gloves, meant that Roland effectively inherited the title.
If nothing else, his fight with Distorted Argalia shows he has the chops to be a Colour.
