who do you play as here? do we have a main character or is this more like you recruit a group stuff?

A character named Roland technically serves as the audience surrogate - with him and Angela being the protagonists - but for gameplay purposes you play as a large group that you "recruit" throughout the game. Every character that isn't a canon character can be fully customized.

Each floor has a head librarian and eventually 4 assistants. The assistants are 100% customizable. Roland and angela are the dueteragonists, but you can customize the floors of the library at your leisure.

Angela and Roland serve as the game's main protagonists. A lot of battles are arguably from the perspective of Angela, seeing as you're basically directing the "stageplay" (that is, the battles) by telling your librarians (Roland included) what to use in response to the enemy.

Think of it kinda like a strategy game, where you control multiple units. LoR is definitely its own beast in terms of mixing genres, but describing it like that might answer your question.
