So far that part has been intentional, but i'm not sure if it's intentional you could still opt out without book loss if you leave during Act 2 floor selection or beyond. (Not that i mind for grind-purposes, though. Sometimes all you need is in Act 1 and Act 2+ is just a waste of time.)
So in any case leaving during Act 1 floor selection is intentional, letting you gauge the enemy and create a better-suited team. During act 2 floor selection, though, i dunno.
And if you want to quit a fight anytime without book loss there's always quitting the game to desktop rather then to the title screen, be it the normal way, or by force-closing it. (Hope they don't do away with that one, some fights are way too RNG-reliant, and an early death is pretty much a guaranteed loss.)
What I tried to make clear is that I think that choosing the leave or exit to title should have the same result. So that the books would only consume on initializing the fight. All in all I think project Moon hasn't run into this problem yet, and I hope that it'll get fixed in the future, it kinda sucked to lose books to nothing, it feels very unsatisfying.
as you kinda said its most likely unintential that you dont get the earned books, it would be a good idea to put it in the bug reports
