yep, it's still intended. The alcove wasn't put in there randomly, it's part of the puzzle. Maybe watch the walkthrough again more carefully
Or think of it like this: The time fizzlers don't designate an area where time portals can be used, they just activate your ability to shoot time portals when you move through them one way and de-activate it the other way. They also don't fizzle regular portals.
What you're actually supposed to do:
place regular portals inside and outside the alcove, walk into the alcove to activate time portals, then walk through your portal to exit
I believe the intended solution is to walk into the alcove to gain the ability to place time portals and then use regular portals to get out of there, maintaining your ability.
..Well. Not "wrong direction". It's actually facing the right way. But it's also accessible easily without issue...
I can't complain, because it's an excellent mod, but I hope that the upcoming levels aren't as 'find the right pixel to jump and put portals in'.
Edit: seems I did it the hard way. The easy way seems more like an oversight than an intended solution though.
Level 17 is solvable with only using the timeportal in the little scrub. I think this is the intended solution, although annoying.
edit 2: seems the way you apparently can bypass the timeportal inhibitor is the way to go. Meh. Tough to know the concepts of forcefields and rules.
