Myst
Defining MYST and its legacy?
I've thought a lot about this game over the years - how to classify what it is and the impact it had on gaming, entertainment and even PC hardware. Check out this retrospective look back at this amazing experience: https://youtu.be/okuLUJF9MFY

It was big enough after its first launch that the New York Times wrote an article about it in December of 1994. (It's online but behind a paywall) I don't think the NYT covered many computer games back then, and probably still don't. Shows how groundbreaking it was! Another great article from this time-period can be found at https://www.wired.com/1994/08/myst/
It's basically a point and click adventure game. These types of games went through several stages. They started in the 70's as text adventures. Think Zork. From there, they moved into text adventures that also had graphics, basically a still image above the text box to show you where you were. The Quest/Ring Quest are good examples of this. From there we moved into games that still had a text box but you could also move your character around. King's Quest started that, and it evolved into SCUMM-based games. This game was a different type of evolution from there, making everything fully GUI-based.

While games exactly like the original version of Myst aren't really made anymore, it is the grandaddy of walking simulators today.
