if you are concerned about not progressing enough through this game then i highly suggest consulting a walkthrough/guide online since though it can make it too easy that is far better than letting it seem impossible and giving up on seeing the entire game...
On a personal note; I think that we're kinda conditioned in modern games to follow the narrative in a linear fashion being kinda led by the nose from thing to thing. Myst's non-linear narrative structure that literally just plops you in the world with no clues at all is really an old-school thing not used too much nowadays.
Being disoriented and becoming oriented to the world using nothing but my own curiosity is, IMO a major part of the fun and value in the experience. The same skills you would need if you were dropped in a random country where you don't speak the language and have never been before and you had to orient yourself and figure it out are the key to getting through Myst.
I won't ever shame anyone for using a walk through or a guide. But i wouldn't. The puzzles are, once you crack them, very simple and you'll feel silly for not figuring it out once you see the answers. Figuring out the puzzles without any prior information is how they're designed. So they may be utterly baffling at first. The temptation to go look it up will be strong. But giver yourself time and don't underestimate your own ability.
Be patient. Don't speed run Myst.
