Hi Chess fans!

It's been a little while since we last shared an update on the progress of An Elaborate History of Chess, so please read on for a summary of what we've been up to recently. There are spoilers ahead, so if you want to go into the game blind be careful what you see!

Development of An Elaborate History of Chess is now (more or less) systems complete. Our main outstanding task before release is content generation, and making sure that there's enough variety and depth in the game through the main storyline.

We have six major dungeons to complete before the anticipated release of the game, and we're hard at work making sure that each dungeon is full of challenging combat, tricky puzzles, and unique bosses and mechanics.

The first major dungeon is now complete! It's themed heavily around pawns and zombies.

There's plenty of puzzles in this dungeon that use poisonous water, and as you progress through the dungeon you'll discover new pathways and progression opportunities and might even find a way to boost the power of your pawns permanently.

Make it all the way through the dungeon, and you'll face the first big boss of An Elaborate History of Chess, The Forgotten Farmer! This hulking beast loves to throw his weight around, so be careful where you position your pieces.

The second major dungeon is also nearing completion and is themed heavily around castles and electricity.

There's plenty of puzzles in this dungeon that make use of electricity, with lots of specialist pieces that can generate, redirect, and store power to operate power-dependent pieces throughout the dungeon.

Awaiting you at the end of the second dungeon is another completely unique boss, which we'll just tease with the image below for now.

Hi Chess fans!

You may have already seen, but we’re delighted to be taking part in this year’s #TurnBasedThursday Fest, and to celebrate, we’re super excited to be releasing a significant overhaul of the An Elaborate History of Chess demo experience!

We don’t want to spoil all the fun changes, but a few headliners include:

We’ve significantly re-worked the demo flow, so that the gameplay is more evenly paced and so that you can see more of what the game has to offer more quickly.

We’ve moved some unlockable upgrades that were originally planned for later in the game to earlier so that they’re now part of the demo. These new controls are aimed at making moving pieces en masse easier.

We’ve added support for widescreen displays, and also now allow window resizing if you want to play at a custom resolution.

We’ve revisited a wide range of piece attack values, health values, abilities, etc. to make pieces more varied and interesting, more appropriate for their place in the demo, and more interesting (particularly when promoting into the Royal Family).

There’s also a whole host of little QOL changes, bug fixes, and other improvements. Unfortunately, because of the significant reworking of the game flow, any previous game saves won’t work with the new version of the demo. We promise that even if you’ve played the demo before, there’s a few new things for you to see - so it’s well worth playing it through again!
