Complete Anomaly Research

I am on the objective Confronting the Unknown, I've illuminated the anomaly, and now it says "Complete the Research." The problem is, there is no incomplete research in the tech tree. There is an explore marker at the anomaly but when I try to send an explorer sub it says "Anomaly Research Not Complete." The only other thing of (possible) note is the the deep sea trench explore icon is still on the map. I have sent an explorer sub there multiple times with no new results and the marker does not clear. I have built a trench extractor but that just seems to be a grossly overpriced genetic trait.

Does anyone know if there is something else I am missing?

I think its related to the destroyed lab and finding all the samples X-Z-Y to complete the virus I believe that X was found in an Exploration Z in the trench and Y was near the anomaly the clusters you had to destroy you can send explorer sub to collect it.

For my very first playthrough, i actually did the exact same thing, i was so super confused for a good 20 or so ingame days that passed.
then i told myself this.
"do i need to expand to the Dark Glows? is it something about the biome that i forgot?"

once i did so, then i found out what i was missing.
basically you can TRY and speedrun the game to the end...but you cannot complete it till you have done everything IN ORDER.
the game has a very specific order to complete the game xD
