⚠️ NO, THE GAME IS NOT "ABANDONED"! ⚠️
Just yesterday, on October 5, the developers have published a roadmap for the completion of the game. Surviving the Abyss will see 3 more large updates which will add a lot to the game (improve the story as well!) and change some of the game's systems significantly.

The developers plan to release these large updates every 3 months, until around Q2 2024, when the game should see final version release.

You can find the roadmap announcement here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1254320/view/3743111843417119680?l=english

For everyone's convenience I am also pasting the full information below:

Surviving the Abyss: Roadmap for Early-Access
"Hi folks, we wanted to provide some much needed clarity on our plans for early access through to 1.0. We are planning to release 3 larger updates and numerous patches into Q2 2024.

The first of these updates involves major changes to the cloning system. Which we'll cover in a bit more detail below. Following that update, we have 2 more planned, but also want to remain flexible to the desires are requests of players throughout early-access. We're only listing the broad strokes below.

Please be aware this is our current set of goals, but we're open to adjusting our path going forward based on the community feedback.

2023:
Major Update #1
Multiple Cloning Labs: previously a single cloning lab was sufficient to last well into the late game. This change will allow you to create independent batches of clones in multiple locations, and considerably rebalances the system to match.
Modular Cloning Labs: the Cloning Lab is getting a major nerf by default. However, a range of new modules will be added which are attached directly to the doorways of cloning labs. You will unlock, mix and match modules to enhance the functionality of your labs, focusing on certain upgrades for specific labs.
Modules can increase the number of slots available within the genetic sequence, increase the chances of specialists being created in a particular lab and more.

Q1 2024:
Major Update #2
UV modules: previously UV mode was a single unlockable upgrade that applied to all Light Towers and Outposts. We intend to add UV modules which are attached directly to individual Lights and Outposts and must be installed throughout the base. This change is intended to place more meaning and pressure on UV mode and expansion, and bring the threat of the anomaly into the later stages of the game.
Anomaly and Anomalous Biomes: we have a number of updates in mind for the Anomaly as part of this release, including work on biomes with new forms of danger. We don't want to give away everything on this aspect right now!

Q2 2024:
Major Update #3
End game: Considerable expansion of the main narrative, including changes to the existing mission format. Addition of a range of new late game missions, and end game content. We'll be going into more detail closer to release.
Expanded Emergent Event System: We intend to expand the range and content of emergent events considerably. In addition we plan to update the event system to add chains of emergent events, with follow up events occurring depending on the decisions you make.
We're also trying to leave room to be flexible and address additional requests and new design throughout early-access.

------------------------------

Patches & Minor Updates:
We also plan to release numerous minor updates and patches during this period.
We intend to put a serious focus on user experience enhancements and bug fixing.
We are also aiming to enhance the tutorial and first time user experience.

Visual Updates:
We aim to enhance the visual experience with reworked biomes, additional environmental content, points of interest and more. This will be an ongoing process throughout the early-access period!

________________________

This isn't an exhaustive list, and there are other aspects of the game we, and the community want to improve and iterate on, including power, research, wildlife capture and more. We'll be updating the community with any changes we make, and continuing to take feedback onboard.
Us at Paradox Arc and RocketFlair all want to extend our thanks to everyone who's engaged with the game so far."

This is reassuring, I was curious about the game but did not want to buy a game that would never be complete and needed more polish badly. People have be burned by EA before, nice to see that this is not one of those game.

ie - they are going to 1/2 "asp" it and hope to pull something good enough out of their "asp" they don't get sued.. or cause mass refunds?

to late. i'm already trying to refund..

likely wont work.. until they release.. but we can try. and yea.. i know the threat of mass refunds might make the delay release.. but...

it is what it is.

The fact that they already decided it will be abandoned after 1.0 means that they will half-ass it to that point ASAP and call it a "release", instead of releasing it after getting it to a great state and then adding on top of it after 1.0. Yes, they said that they will make sure it is great, but I call BS on that. Paradox decided that there is no money in this and they want out, hoping that players have gold fish memory and keep buying their other games. Not the first nor last game that had it happen to it. Thankfully reviews warned me off this one.

Yeah this is insanely suspicious to me. I'm not gonna call the devs out on anything but it sounds like they're doing a "Going from version beta 0.14 to "finished" 1.0 in one swell foop". Not really buying that. If I see good changes then I'll change my mind.

It really depends on the genre and state of release. Nowdays games are sold so buggy, that they often need months of post release care to be enjoyable long term. This genre is typically meant to have high replayability and in order to achieve that, usually additional support after release is needed, regardless of how polished it was. Exception to this would be if game was content rich, on top of already being polished, but this is not gonna be Baldurs Gate 3, I can already tell; even mentioned BG3 had several patches after releasing. I expect radio silence with this game.

Baldur's Gate 3 was an anomaly, I think we're all aware of that
Dracuras Nov 2, 2023 @ 9:13pm
As it stands they'll do another year or two of work updating and refining the game, but once it's updated to 1.0 who knows. They might do a bit more polishing and bug fixing, or leave it there for paradox arc to do what they will with it.
Cryten Nov 3, 2023 @ 1:27am
The roadmap says that 1.0 will release in quarter 2, 2024. So we have about 6 months left. Assuming no delays. We will get 3 patches of which 2 will be reworks of existing mechanics and the final one will be the end game. With possible unannounced bug patches and tweaks in between depending on the devs.

Anomaly that used to be a standard back in the days when we didn't get patches after release, because people rarely had Internet connection or convienient ways to get them like with Steam. Now games are often rushed and hopefully fixed after. With this one, we already know it will be both rushed and likely not fixed after, except maybe some tiny things. Any fundamental flaws will remain once they are out of time.

Since it is a Paradox game (or it appears to be directed by them), it is likely barebanones and meant to sell multitude of DLC. It just screams failure.

just sounds like a devs say one thing but do another completely different thing. to me, meh if it gets to 1.0 and seem decent, ill buy into it.. if not ive literally lost nothing from what ive seen of the game thats posted around atm

they didn't bother to spend the *last* year refining and polishing the game, so don't get your hopes up

Look man, some people do want every game to be "games as a service" dlc quest with 'infinite' content.
