It isn't even that, p2p makes sense for a 1v1. It is how they have implemented it. Look at fighting games with rollback vs delay based etc. Skullgirls for example feels better playing from Australia to America then Street Fighter 4 feels playing within the same state.
This could be a hacker, it it could just be the game rolling back the damage or similar after the fact as he was host and what you saw wasn't what the game was syncing to.
It is a very fun online mode, with beyond horrid technical implementation.
