is it me or are the hitboxes broken?
for some reason when i shoot the top of the head or the side of the head it counts as a bodyshot. i just killed a clot with 4 9mm bullets to the top of the head, he flinched with each shot and died with his head intact. it looks like you need to hit the nose/mouth for it to count as headshot, what the hell?

Firstly, I'd like to point out that the hitboxes in Solo mode and on Listen servers are going to be different from the ones on Dedicated servers. If you're going to play multiplayer matches at some point, chances are they're going to take place on dedicated servers, and not all hitbox-related habits you aquire on other kinds of servers will be transferrable. For this reason, I recommend getting adjusted to hitboxes the right way from the start by using dedicated servers for everything, even solo games.

The process of setting up a dedicated server is pretty straightforward. It's described in the respective TWI Wiki page[wiki.tripwireinteractive.com]. However, I'd like to note the following:

  • You should use the following SteamCMD download link for Windows (instead of the one the Wiki suggests): http://media.steampowered.com/installer/steamcmd.zip .
  • If you're running the server from the same PC you're playing on, make sure to start the server after starting the game.
  • If you're not planning to invite players located outside of your home network, you don't need to forward any ports.

Secondly, yes, hitboxes in this game are counterintuitive at times. In order to see them and study their behaviour, download any Test Map which shows hitboxes:

Unfortunately, at this moment SteamyTestMapV3 and SteamyTestMapV3RodeoMod are not available in the Steam Workshop, and the original download links are broken. However, they can be downloaded from an alternative resource - http://killingfloor.ru/xforum/threads/raznye-game-type-i-karty-k-nim.4219. Search for "Testing Mode", and reveal the spoiler ("Спойлер"). "D/L" links are the ones I listed above.

Alternatively, you can look for servers running these maps, download them and extract all the required files from the Cache folder.

SteamyTestMapV3 and SteamyTestMapV3RodeoMod

ESC -> Commands -> Misc. options -> Check "Draw head hitboxes".

The color of the hitboxes can be cutomized in the "Display" tab ("Head Hitboxes").

TheTestMap-2

ESC -> Testmap -> Generic -> Check "Display headzones" (head hitboxes) and "Display Hitboxes" (other hitboxes).

Yeah, you have to shoot the face. It's a weird hitbox system and makes it a pain in the ass to kill sirens since you have to aim for the center of the head very precisely.

The hitboxes in KF have always been wack, good game nonetheless, but the hitbox thing was always a point of rircule.

Hitboxes are not broken for a good 90% of time besides a few collision occurances and after-flinch states. If you can not headshot a simple Clot most likely you're not leading your shot properly, else suffering recoil.

DL the testmap, turn on 'show hitboxes' observe fleshpound and scrake 'hitboxes' from all angles and hurt yourself laughing at TWI's ineptitude. "Not Broken"? Riiiiiight then. :steamfacepalm:

The fact that you need a testmap to find a hitbox on head which is not even on the head or anywhere near it, is... broken beyond belief.

May be your aiming method is broken only? I can land headshots from different angles with little to no problems. Leading and controlling recoil in this game requires several hours of practice to get used to.
Try to practice more and watch faked player challenge solo videos.
If you're concerned, set your sensitivity to be slower for precise aiming, disable mouse acceleration, set a bigger field of view value (110-120) and increase server tickrate to 60Hz.

Nah, the hitboxes are a joke, maybe twi could make them to actually be on the targets instead, instead of jumping around the place like a rabbit on fire and spinning around the outside of the animations like a dizzy whirlwind? Watch a video of some doughnut to find a hitbox that should be on a head to start with? Use a testmap and 'show hitboxes' to find out how badly they are made and aren't even on the head at all a lot of the time, all because they ARE in fact broken? No thanks.:)

They're fine client-side. The problem is that when you are playing online, the hitboxes are server-side, and the game tries to guess where the hitbox is going to be by the time the server registers that you have fired your weapon. It gets funky after that. The hitboxes are actually much larger when you play online to compensate for this, but only when the zed is simply moving.

Yeah sometimes they get broken regardless, some maps also have terrible pathing and the shot wont align properly. Also there is a bug if you use third person even if for some brief moment, when you come back to first person your player is kind of crouched and the aim is not in the right posiiton, you can press the crouch button to correct this.

If you have demos or even other perks shooting at your zeds, expect them to be broken as well quite often.
Bro Bike Apr 11, 2022 @ 2:56pm
The reason the hitboxes are bad is because they are static, they DO NOT MOVE even iof the Zed is bobbing his head etc. There is plenty of vids on youtube showing the real hitbox of the head and how bad they are.

Once again, this game has static hitbox, just like in Quake 1. The Patriarch even has his head hitbox located at his hand (not even kidding).
