Livestock
New to the game and have a livestock question:

What happens to the offspring of livestock/how should I prepare pastures?

For example: if a cow barn has 80 capacity, should I have 40 cows in it and leave the other 40 for potential offspring? Or do they just go into overcrowding mode until it's sorted?

Do I need a few additional pastures placed to prepare for different growth stages until they are ready to sell?

And finally, how do I find out at what final stage each animal is worth the most and thus ready to sell?

Thank you!

I didn't play around with animals a lot but I can try and help.

Animals don't die, doesn't matter if they're old, or you starve them, it only affects how well they produce products, like milk, wool or eggs. If their health is 0%, they also can't reproduce until they're back up to at least ~80%.

Don't buy bulls unless you aim to raise and sell, they aren't required for breeding. Cows automatically start reproducing once they're at least 18 months old. Same thing goes for chickens, they don't need a rooster to reproduce.

Offsprings are automatically born into the same pen where the parent is. The pen can't be overcrowded, and the reproduction will pause if it's full, and only continue when there is space, either sell older cows, calves, or move the calves to a different pen where they can grow up. If you have 40 cows, I would leave 40 free space for those cows calves.

Each type of livestock is sold for the highest price at a different age. You can check an animals age in the animal menu.

  • Cows are most profitable to sell around 36 months old, if they're raised for beef.
  • Pigs sell best around 6 months old, they also reproduce quickly.
  • Sheep sell best at 24 months old, but you shouldn't sell them, it's better to leave them to produce wool.
  • Chickens are best sold at 6 months old, once they are fully grown, but like the sheep I believe it is better to keep them to produce eggs. Once they reach 6 months and their peak selling price, then the price doesn't go down the older they get, you can sell a 6 months old chicken, and a 24 months old chicken, they'll sell for the same amount.

And a link to a list for cows, and when they sell the best, or produce the most of something

Any other questions I can try help again.
